October is Trichotillomania Awareness Month…

Trichotillomania is an OCD related disorder afflicting mostly women, which creates a compulsion to pull on, or to even pull out one’s hair, causing unsightly bald spots, stubble, thinning hair and an erosion of self esteem.


On Friday, October 17, 2008 a 22 year old client of the The Secret Mane Salon in Stroudsburg, PA, afflicted with Trichotillomania (or “Trich” as it is commonly known) will receive a dramatic hair piece installation, as part of The Secret Mane’s “Mane For A Year” program.


Mane For A Year is a program that was started by Charlene Blacer, owner of The Secret Mane Salon, whose clientele is made up of more than 50% Trich sufferers. Mane For A Year provides hair pieces, hair extensions, scalp treatments, supplements and lots of moral support for Trich sufferers. Charlene’s program has helped people with Trich to grow their hair back up to ten inches in length.


Due to the cost of these treatments (hair pieces and extensions), and the fact that insurance does not provide for these treatments, The Secret Mane Salon has established a non-profit organization called HelpMe2Stop.org to raise money for economically disadvantaged people who are in need of The Secret Mane’s “Mane For A Year” program!


On October 17th at 1PM a 22 year old client who is traveling up to Stroudsburg, PA all the way from Virginia to receive installation of her donated hair piece, will be fielding questions for local media regarding her experiences with Trichotillomania. She will be photographed and have her dramatic before and after appearance videotaped for television and still photography.
The 22 year old girl is also a member of 29-Day Giving Challenge.
