I love to ride the classic American and vintage international electric street cars whenever possible. Thursday was a bright blue, big cloud day in San Francisco, a perfect day to see the sights of Market Street from 1915 Italian trolley.
On my way back up Market Street from my meeting, I jumped aboard a 1940's American car that had been upgraded to accommodate passengers in wheel chairs, but had also kept it's
quaint fold-down green vinyl one person seats. I dropped down into a forward facing single seat at the window.
At Powell Street a man loaded down with plastic bags and backpacks got on. He greeted many of us, and sat down two seats in front of me to carry on a lively conversation with the driver. He seemed friendly and funny, not a crazy street person, just a man bubbly with life.
At the next stop, a woman climbed aboard with her sleeping baby strapped to her body in a front pack. The Powell St. man immediately declared, "Baby Buck! A buck for the baby. I like to give all young mothers a buck for the baby!"
As the man fished in his pockets for a dollar, the young woman came back with a smile and a blessing, "That will come back to you ten-fold!." He protested as he held out the dollar, perhaps thinking she would want to give him, or owe him, ten. She went on to say that in
scripture it says that whatever you give will come back to you times ten.
I was enjoying watching this spontaneous reciprocation of gifts. The man made some more friendly protests, and a meek thank you. "It's a blessing," I offered, before I could even think about it. She turned to me with a big smile. "Yes, that's right, a blessing, that's how it works."
The young mother and I unfolded the seat in front of me, and she sat down. She allowed me a peek at her 2 month old baby boy, sleeping happily in his pack. We exchanged "Have a wonderful day" as she stepped off the car two stops later.
I had a wonderful day.
