29-Day Giving Challenge

Could you help (sewing) for a lady with end stage MS?

Hello, my grandmother has end stage MS (bedbound, paralysed, has fluids via a feeding tube etc). Her skin is also very fragile and if she hasn't got an air matress and soft pillows under her than in rapid time sores break out (which tend to get infected etc).

I buy her cushties which are very soft, you can see pictures of them here http://www.prezzybox.com/products/index.aspx?pid=4054 and they are used to position her. how ever they aren't washable and frequently, get, um soiled and have to be binned.

I thought it would be great if there were covers for them which could be washed but i can't find any, and i wondered about making some in a fabric which could be washed and wouldnt soak through instantly, only I can't sew! I thought about asking here on the off chance someone would be willing to sew some covers please? I know its a long shot but thought I would ask just incase. My nan has 4 cushties, they are about 35 cm long and 16cm diameter. We live in england.

Thank you for reading,
Vikki

Hi, Vikki. I'm trying to find a person on etsy.com who sews washable pads. They have a think layer of latex adhered to flannel, which I think would be perfect for your nan's use.

I'll let you know what I find this week.

All the best to you,

Mary
I also just found info on a soft, highly absorbant material called Zorb. I'll look into that, too. I am happy to volunteer to make four pillowcases and I'm looking for a volunteer to make four more, so Nan always has fresh pillowcases.

I'll help, Mary. Send me details when you get them.
GREAT! Thanks, Eileen!!!
I saw this wonderfabric at a matttress Store, looks like what you are describing Mary, cost $100.00 for a queen bed cover. Somone HAS to sell the fabric, Ican go to the store and findout what kind of fabric it it, if you want, then we can look for it. I also bought waterproof washable pads for my period, and they make them for incontience too-completely breatheable, on an ebay store, they are backed with a fabric thaqt does not bleed or leak thru, like a fleece or sheepskin, I can look into that too and will post links if anyone can use the type fabrics I am talking about to cover the pillows. They also sell those microbeads that are IN the pillows at JoAnne's or Hobby Lobby, I saw them when I was shopping for quilt batting this week. So pillows can be fashioned in anyother size and shape needed!

Thanks, Sharon for checking into the fabric! And those pads you bought on ebay are the pads I referred to above. I bought mine on etsy. Great idea about the microbeads, too.

Vikki - would your nan like other shaped pillows or longer ones?

I found where to buy Zorb fabric from an etsy seller who uses it:

I puchase my ZORB from "Wazoodle" and this is the only company you can purchase ZORB from.(they manufacture the fabrics)
They are located in Canada.

I'll call Zorb and get a cost comp to compare with the fabric you mentioned.

Thanks again,

Mary
