Haiti is a human disaster. And, like wars and other traumas, a disaster for all humanity. What can I do? What can I give? How can I help without getting in the way?
I start with prayer: prayer is my way of directing whatever units of grace I have toward the people who need that quality of mercy the most.
Next, I keep heart open and keep listening: the unimaginable suffering, loss, grief and confusion must be witnessed. The people in the midst of that strife cannot possibly carry the enormous burden by themselves. Giving time and attention, prayer and blessing, helps lighten their psychic load.
This morning, I found Gratitude: survivors found and rescued, aid is making its way into the interior, competent and well-supplied help are doing their best on the ground. I support them with my whole heart, sending them blessings and energy to stay the course in their giving.
On the practical level, food and clothing and money will flow Haiti-ward over the next few weeks and months. However, my urge to help is not dependent upon having a physical solution for suffering, nor do I have to wait to channel compassion. My spiritual aid--to witness, pray and give energy--goes out ahead of any material contribution.
Bless us all,
Angel
