29-Day Giving Challenge

Project #2: Providence Women and Infants Hospital, Rhode Island

I am taking the initiative here to give us a place to focus our skills until Allie is up and running in her new place. The hospital coordinator told me that knitted blankies are also welcome if the yarn is soft and not itchy, along with quilts of course. The most welcome size is about a yard square or even a bit larger(the nurses like to cover the plastic incubator units to keep it darker for the babies, but smaller ones are welcome also. These babies are in the NICU but many do go home, and the nurses make the judgement call whether to give them the quilt to take with them, if they are in need. Otherwise, they get laundered in the hospital and recylced to more babies.

Please let me know if this project is acceptable to this group. Thanks, Eileen

Three blankets and tags sent! I used a huge recycable plastic bag for all 29 last time. I did not pre-wrap any of them. I just tied my ribbon and tags around them so that the nurses could find the perfect one. They also said they all love to look at each one haha! Definately a cute idea!
Allie....I received your 3 blankies and tags. Thanks so much. They are a great first start for you. When you find time again I suggest you try a basic quilt class....I'm sure there's something in your town. I changed from calligraphy to quilting when my second daughter was born. I thought it would be less messy around them, dry things instead of wet ink! But looks like you'll have your hands full for a while!

We now have 28 blankies, including one I'm finishing. I'm expecting a couple from Mary......
2 of the blankies are very small, one is mine, and if I end up with an extra when Mary's arrives I'll hold back on my small one and use that for a doll quilt. I procrastinated again this week and haven't been in touch with the volunteer coordinator....I'm still hoping for next Thursday to deliver.
Ok, this time I'm REALLY going to the post office TODAY. I'm so sorry I haven't shipped them yet. They're ready to go; they just haven't made it out the door. I'm sending two crocheted blankets with two recyclable tote bags from Marshall's. Nice and only a buck. Think I'll deliver all of mine for the Texas Project #3 in these bags - not 29 of them; just enough to carry them all to the hospital. They can use or give them away as they please.

Mary
you are very welcome :)...someday i hope to get to a class...my grandmom was an amazing quilter and id like to take after her!

PROJECT #2 COMPLETED!!!!!!!!!
My husband and I brought the blankies to Providence Women and Infants Hospital yesterday. The experience was quite different than I imagined it. This hospital wing which houses NICU is very new and I suspect state-of-the-art. Instead of having babies all in one room, as in the old wing, each baby has it's own high tech room, which includes a sleeper couch for the parents. As we were given the tour, I could only peek in a second or two to see any babies....I did notice that there was a pink crocheted blanket over one of the plastic cubicles the babies are kept in...which helps keep it darker for them. These babies are so well taken care of that the turnover rate is faster than other hospitals. And the ratio of babies that pass on is very low. The woman who gave us the tour was not the one I had talked to on the phone...her day off. There were no nurses available to come see and "gush over" the blankets as with Allie's photos.....they also had a generator down so everyone was intensely into their duties and she couldn't bring anyone else into our situation. Today I spoke with my original contact and she said most of the blankets will be given out in a week or so. There are a couple of liasons who deal directly with the families who do this work. It was good to find out that they accept babies from out-of-state too, and that they sometimes get around the insurance when some have difficulty with that, and just absorb the cost into their whole program. There are two other small groups who donate outfits and hats. I was concerned that there wasn't as much need for these blankies as with a more obvious lower-economic community (the facility itself, being new, gives the impression that all is well-endowed), but she told me there were some babies that came to them with only a diaper and there were all levels of income.

Here's a photo Bob insisted we take to show you all we've been there! I will also post the last group of quilts that haven't made it up yet. My thanks to those who supported this project...............Eileen
AMAZING!!!! Thank you so very much for doing #2! Please thank your husband also :).

Here's the rest of the quilts and hopefully that will make the full 29 put up here in photos.

The top 2 crocheted are from Dawn and the rest are from me.

My text with the photos disappeared so...................the top 2 crocheted blankies are from Dawn, and the rest are mine.
Hopefully I got them all!
I just recounted them and there is one duplicate.......can you find it?
All beautiful! Great pic of you and Bob. Love the background on the hospital!

FYI everyone - decided with Eileen that I would keep the ones I have for Project #3.
