I was travelling recently and just wanted some light reads for the plane, and relaxing. Here are two that fit the bill and were pleasant escapes.
The Goodbye Quilt by Susan Wiggs
Summary (from library catalog): As her only child readies for college, fabric shop owner Linda Davis is torn between excitement for Molly and heartache for herself. Mother and daughter decide to share one last adventure -- a cross-country road trip to move Molly into her dorm. As they make their way through the heart of the nation, Linda pieces together the scraps that make up Molly's young life. And in stitching each bit of fabric, she discovers that the memories can come together in a way that will keep them both warm in the years to come.
The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh
Summary from Publisher: "The story of a woman whose gift for flowers helps her change the lives of others even as she struggles to overcome her own past"—
Jane,
I find that I need to "mix it up" with books sometimes ... I read some self-help too, but I need to do some good fiction in between, sometimes throw in something I wouldn't normally read just for a change of pace, sometimes just something light and fun
Ok - Glad I checked in to see what everyone has been reading! I need a book. However, I am feeling like I don't want to read any of the books I got for Christmas - All self help - which means I have friends who love me or I have issues or both (LOL). Also signed up for a self help seminar through Landmark and now I don't want to do that either. Lately just feel like cooking, painting (just the walls no masterpeices) and spending time outdoors....
i just finished reading The Last of the Just by Andre Schwartz-Bart and it was absolutely incredible! it is a about a 'fictional' young Jewish boy growing up in Nazi Germany, but the events are all too real. it is not for the faint of heart but i can't recommend it enough.
the copyright says 1960 and the cover says the author's parents died in the concentration camps. you can tell that the horrors are very fresh in his mind. it's extremely moving and powerful.
Thanks for the tips, Dawn. Like you, I loved the Little House books. I think I have the whole set as I would get a couple of books for Christmas or birthdays. I'm going to check out "The Wilder Life" and "The Help" too. :)
my Mom sent me The Help early last year. it took me a while to get into it but once i did i REALLY liked it. i'm glad i stuck with it.
i just finished reading "The Wilder Life" by Wendy McClure. it's about a woman who 'is on a quest to find the beloved world of Little House on the Prairie author Laura Ingalls Wilder-a fantastic realm of history, fiction and places she's never been but somehow knows by heart'. i was a huge fan of the Little House books and often imagined myself as Laura (didn't we all?) and i really enjoyed this book. i won't tell any more cause i don't want to spoil it for anyone. Hugs, Dawn
Anybody want to share about what they've been reading lately?
I read "How Full is Your Bucket?" I thought it was good, but not great - maybe my expectations were too high because of the things I had heard others say about it.
I also recently read "The Help." This one I thought was a great read. I haven't seen the movie, but I want to now (I usually like to read the book first). I knew it was popular and wasn't sure if it'd live up to they hype, but now I think I see what the hype was all about. Loved it.
you're welcome, nana/deb. feel free to ask any time, you can just message me if you like. i can't make any promises but as the saying goes, every now and then a blind squirrel finds an acorn! Hugs, Dawn
dawn, I finally got a hit on the secret and read the reveiws and they were almost all negative, so decided against it for now. but thanks for looking at your store.
