Books are one's best friends! I normally buy a book so that I can read and write in it as well. Right now, I have just started reading Oprah's Book Club's:One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I have had it for a long time but did not get to reading it. Here I go!

I have learned to view the movie and the book as two separate beasts.. I actually wrote a paper about this in grad school. What I discovered was that about 50% of the time they do a pretty good job on the movie and having read the book improves the movie experience and about 50% of the time, the only thing the two have in common are the title. In about 95% of the cases the book was better than the movie. The few times I found that to be different were when a book was very long and meandering and the movie cut to the chase. For me, the two best examples of that are Stephen King's "The Body" and the movie Stand By Me, and Pat Conroy's Prince of Tides.

right now I'm reading "New Moon" the second book in the Twilight series ... anyone interested in a discussion on these??

I haven't seen the movies or anything and am not super-crazy about them, but they are sort of intriguing ....

My friend lent them to me. We talked about it beforehand and she said "It's not something I'd usually be into" (vampire stories? me neither) She said, "But they're well-written and just sort of a fun, easy read." That's exactly what they've been for me. I'm enjoying.

Dear JennH I totally agree with you. This has happened to me too. I always think twice before going to a movie if I have read the book. Blessing and good wishes from Nahluwa

I have found that if I read the book before I see the movie, I'm almost sure to be disappointed. The only exception to this has been the Harry Potter movies. I think they've done pretty well for the most part on those.

i've had that experience more times than i can count, of the movie not being true to the book. the first time i remember noticing it was with the Little House on the Prairie series back in the 70s.

i think that sometimes they change it up is that movies need to have more action (it's pretty hard to film what's going on inside someone's head, or a long detailed description of a place for instance). other times i think they change some things to make it appeal to a wider cross section of people, so they can make more money selling tickets and stuff. whatever the reason, it is pretty disappointing. it's probably irritating to the people who are watching with me too since i'll constantly be saying, "that's not how it went!" LOL

I am not a TV watcher but my gift for Day 5 was to go back and watch some TV shows with my husband. We watched the shows he wanted and I did it with grace and did not complain.
