Day 29: Serendipity

Yesterday, February 29th, I was able to give a totally unexpected and unplanned gift.  One of my many responsibilities at my job is photographing students at assemblies, special events, working on exciting projects, etc.  Yesterday, we had our school spelling bee for students in grades five through eight.  The winning student will go on to represent our town in the State Spelling Bee.  I did not have to stay in the auditorium for the entire contest, only for the beginning to take pictures of…See More

Day 28: The day I've been waiting for

If you've never volunteered to read a book to your child's class, do it, now, don't wait.  Ok, wait until tomorrow when school is open, but do it.  My children's preschool asks parents to come in and read a book to the class, one per month.  I knew when I signed up for the challenge, that would be one of my gifts, but I wanted it to be a surprise for my son, so I didn't tell him until after I brought him to his classroom this morning. I have a copy of Over in the Meadow illustrated by Louise…See More

Day 25: Clothing and Shoes Drop Box

I just wanted to let you all know that I brought a bog of clothes that the kids had outgrown to one of the many drop boxes we have around town for people to donate when Goodwill is closed, or it's just more convenient.Other than that, I'm just not in the mood to write tonight.Sleep well everyone. See More

Days 23 and 24: Just doing my job

I think I'm going to have to add these two days into my March do-over days.  I didn't do anything particularly exceptional in the giving department. Yesterday, I was extra helpful to a parent, and I did something that perhaps would not have been done if someone else had answered the phone, though I mean no disrespect to my coworkers.  One of the preschool parents called with a dilemma.  She had invited her daughter's classmates to her birthday party, but many of them had not rsvp'd yet, so she…See More

Day 20: cookies and costumes

I'm feeling a little bit conflicted tonight.  There are real, serious problems in the world right now, and all I have to contribute right now are cookies and tickets to a fashion show.  But since that's all I've got, a little more explanation is required. Not so much for the first item.  Cookies are cookies.  Last night, my sister-in-law brought her granddaughter, our grandneice to stay at our hosue for a sleepover with our kids.  I made a very yummy dinner of baked penne, salad, and bread, and…See More

Days 18 and 19: Wiring by Spiderman

Hi everyone.  Sorry I missed you all yesterday.  We had Internet problems.  In 12 years at our old house, we never had cable problems.  We have not been that lucky here, and we really don't know if the problem is with the cable company, or with the previous homeowners.  When the cable man came out for the first time, he and my husband discovered that the existing cable had been split at least eight times.  My husband said that it was as though the house had been wired by Spiderman.  A cable…See More

Day 17: Do-over day

Today was giving redemption day.  I knew I had to make up for yesterday, so I grabbed a box from inside the large Goodwill box to take to the donation center.  On the way home from work/school, I pulled into the parking lot and went up to the door, which was locked, with a sign that said back at 1:30.  Perfect.  I knew I would make it back later on my way to deliver another gift, so I wasn't too bothered. The kids and I went to the supermarket to get all the ingredients for chicken soup with…See More

Day 9: No gift too small

Hello again, everyone!  I'm happy to report that I have, so far, dodged the stomach bug, but I made up for it yesterday with a splitting headache.  Fortunately, the whole family was back to work and school today.I made a very quick stop at Goodwill today, dropping off one woman's dress and one pair of baby shoes.  The teenager at the counter was not impressed. "Is that it?" he asked."Yes," I replied."You wanna receipt?" he asked, after looking at what he clearly considered a pathetic donation.I…See More

Day 5: the kind of giving I was anticipating

Alas, my team just lost the Super Bowl to the Giants, again, so I'm going to focus on something more pleasant.Today was a good day for giving, and the kind of giving that I've been planning to do for some time.  It's been slightly over three months since we moved into our new home, and we finally started tackling (ugh, bad choice of words) the boxes, bags, totes, and more boxes filled with toys.  One of the many wonderful things about our new home is the huge finished basement, which we have…See More

Why I'm choosing to give:
Two years ago when I was waiting to give birth to my daughter, I was doing a daily countdown on facebook. When I was researching what I should put for day 29, I found your site. I said I would like to do it in the future. Since this is a leap year, the 29 days of February seemed like the perfect time.

Day 12 Do-over: Oh, how I wish I could do over this whole day

Posted on March 4, 2012 at 7:06pm 4 Comments

February 12th was the day the stomach bug caught up with me.  It caused me to miss my bosses' daughter's wedding.  I am still so pissed off about that.  I also cIouldn't give anything that day, so today made up for that.  I made another Goodwill drop, this time with several baby toys and a crystal decantur that some well-meaning, but misinformed friend or family member gave to us for our wedding.  Giving it away made room in the storage cabinet fot my cake-decoration toolbox, so it was a…

Day 6 Do-Over: An Annual Gift

Posted on March 4, 2012 at 6:57pm 2 Comments

Day six of my 29-Day challenge was the start of the stomach bug in my house.  It definetly needed a do-over.  Yesterday, Saturday, March 3rd provided that opportunity.  Our grandniece was having her birthday party.  I have been making her birthday cakes for her entire life, and this year was no exception.  In the past I've made a Care Bears cake for her, a cake covered in daisies, I even made a cake with the "Fairly Oddparents" on it.  This year, she was having a pool party and requested a…

Day 4 Do-over: Made with love, given away with a smile

Posted on March 1, 2012 at 8:45pm 3 Comments

Looking over my blog posts, I discovered the first day that needed a do-over was February 4th.  It was a Saturday that seemed to consist of a very long, drawn out temper tantrum from my daughter.  So it seemed fitting that today I gave away something that was soft and would help comfort a baby.  One of the women I work with crochets baby hats and blankets.  She always has a stash of hats, and she gave me one for my daughter.  The hat went from being too big last winter to too small this…
