Hi Julie - I am new to 29gifts (I'm on day 6) and just read your blog. I know how hard it is to deal with hospitals and doctors, as I was the caregiver for my mom when she was sick. She had Lupus, and several cancers. I also know how hard it is…

Life's strange turns...

Just when you think things can't get any worse....After a summer battle with my lupus I was getting my bearings when i discovered my kid sister (yes, still a kid at 54) had been hiding a breast lump for many months. It began an oddysey of doctors, hospitals and tests until we learned it was an invasive ductal carcinoma and she is triple negative. That group, less than 15% of breast cancers, does not get any of the new targeted treatmenst...only the old chemo and radiation. With here seizure…See More

Along with everyone's prayers keeping us going came a card for me from Lois at 29gifts- a simple card that gave me such strength that day!

Why I'm choosing to give:
My telephone answering machine says "Practice random acts of kindness" because I really believe we were all given gifts of the spirit to share with one another. Though I try to be aware of opportunities to give, this challenge will help me be even more aware! I often get into philosophical discussions about getting to Heaven, where you have no more needs. Well, if nobody needs anything, then nobody can know the joy of giving or comforting or sharing! I believe there will be room up there for giving of the highest order!
What I'd most like to receive:
I already receive the blessing of knowing the joy of giving! If I would hope to receive something more, it would be for more resources to share with others. I could WANT a lot of things, but all I truly NEED is the strength face each day with fortitude and end each day with gratitude!
How did you hear about the 29-Day Giving Challenge?
In a Sunday newspaper profile.
About me:
I just turned the big six-oh, I am retired/disabled due to 25 years of Systemic Lupus, and I write a couple of weekly hometown newspaper columns for the local paper. Whether in pink clown hair and twisting balloon animals for charity, in Red Hat as my chapter's Queen Mother, or purple garb for our American Cancer Society Relay for Life, I find ways to give back to the community that is my home. I try to always be aware of my own blessings!
I'm a huge mystery book fan (mostly cozies and Brit mysteries but I love them all!). I love people and think that every stranger is just a friend you haven't met yet! Ever the Chatterbox, (also the name of my weekly column), my niece once said that I'll talk to to anything! LOL! Very true!

About Gratitude...

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.”
-Melody Beattie

Day 10 Round 2 The best laid plans... go kaput! :)

Posted on August 21, 2010 at 4:48pm 4 Comments

We've waited all week for the ctas and Dogs movie to come to the indoor theatre here and today was the day I was going to gather up the great nieces and nephew and take them to the show. Before my feet hit the floor, however, my sister called to say she twisted her foot the day before and was convinced it was broken. So,,,,,,,,, I spent about 5 hours in the hospital emergency room waiting for an exray on her foot- not the cheeriest place to be, that's for sure. No kids to enteratin with…

Day 8 Round 2 One can never have too many gives- or gifts!

Thank you to all my friends here for the kind words and encouragement! The gloom has passed for the moment and I'm my old annoyingly boisterous self. :)

Today I am driving to a nearby town (out here in the boonies everyhting is a ways away!) with tickets for a chicken barbecue drive-through dinner for a handicapped sports league. I sold tickets to the fundraiser to my friends here, and am doing the drive-through for everyone- delivering their dinners back here in Barker. Having…

Day 7 Round 2 Who goes up must come down

Posted on August 17, 2010 at 11:44am 5 Comments

Yes, I did mean "who." We all know that despite efforts to be perpetually perky and openly optimistic our smiles sometimes get stuck. Our friends and acquaintances see us as always bouncy and bright and able to weather every storm with cheerfullness and joy! We, on the other hand, know there is a little dark demon inside who sometimes wants to hang out a "nobody home" sign, sometimes for no reason other than we want to take a deep breath and....just....stop....for...a...moment. Full moon…
