Day 1
I have decided to comment every day on the gifts I give and capture the experience in the moment. I figured my final essay would be better if I had some recollection of what happened on day 3 or day 19.
Today, I gave the gift of contacting the folks behind this website about a bug on their site. It threw an error when I signed up for the newsletter. I know I really appreciate it when a visitor to one of our sites gives us a heads-up if something is broken. It made me think about the motivations behind my Day 1 gift. Was I being a tech snob or did I care that some folks might be confused by an error page? Did I think I was better than the website owner because of my supposed superior tech skills? Here's a nifty little trick: if you can follow something you said with "Gotcha!" or "neener-neener", check your intent.
I also gave the gift of sharing this website with one of my executives and with my son. This offered another reality check: why them? Why not others? How did I determine/judge who was worthy or who would value it or who would "get" it?

Day 29

So here it is: Day 29. I don't want to overstate things but it has been a transforming experience. The thing I learned is that I already give every day; I just need to be mindful of it and get the full benefit. Both Jesus and the apostle Paul stated that there is more happiness in giving than in receiving. The truth of this statement may be fully experienced personally if one doesn't want to take their word for it.

Day 28

Today I gave my Marketing Director permission to fire herself. That's right, she needs to hire someone else to do that job. She has been "kicked upstairs". She was dreading our conference call today because she thought I was going to read her the Riot Act. But I realize that she needs to be set free from a bunch of tasks so she can focus on what I really need her doing. Permission - what an interesting gift.
