Ch ch changes in the challenge

I haven't been on this board in a while but I've been continuing with my challenge and am now on my sixth cycle. It's interesting to see how my gifts have changed over time and how they parallel what I've read and heard from other people. I wonder if there's a pattern? When I first started, for maybe my first two giving challenge cycles, the things I gave were much more dramatic. Paying for someone's lunch, leaving flowers on a doorstep, making charitable donations. I put a lot of thought into…See More

Why I'm choosing to give:
I was intrigued by Cami's story. I like the idea of committing to giving and consistently thinking about others as part of my daily experience.
What I'd most like to receive:
I actually don't like the idea of give because you want to get something. It's one of the aspects of some religions that makes me most uncomfortable. While there's plenty I'd like to receive in life, what I would most like to receive from this challenge is just the good feeling you get when doing something for someone else.

Getting ready to give

Posted on January 7, 2009 at 4:43pm 2 Comments

I'm getting ready to move next week and going through all my stuff has been overwhelming. I don't like to think of myself as someone who has a lot of "stuff" but it feels like it when I'm packing it all up. There's a lot of stuff I want to give away--mostly clothes, books, videos and toys for kids--and I'm trying to come up with a system to get this stuff to people who really need it. Any advice?

Thanks, Leslie

It was a pleasure to interview Cami and learn more about this great community. Thanks for the inspiration. --Leslie

Perfect quote for the day

Posted on December 4, 2008 at 10:49am 2 Comments

I came across this wonderful quote from Scott Adams and wanted to share it with this group:

"Remember there is no small act of kindness, for every act creates a ripple with no logical end."

It just captures the 29-Day Giving Challenge so well. Thanks for sharing.

Drive through ditch

The golden rule has always seemed a little selfish to me.

I love to do things for other people in part because there’s a buzz I get when I do volunteer work, for example, that makes me feel good about myself. It’s not selfless at all. It’s intentional kindness and I always feel like I get just as much out of it when I volunteer or do something nice as the people I’m trying to help—maybe even more.

But in doing the 29 Gifts Challenge I wanted to try to be randomly… Continue
