Why I'm choosing to give:
Because I've been too focused on my own misfortunes and I want to open up and become more connected to everything and everyone.
What I'd most like to receive:
Love, connection, creative expression, abundance and support in embarking upon this new chapter of my life after greatly changed circumstances. I would be grateful for marketing/business advice in setting up my creative writing workshop and retreat business. If the universe sends an extraordinary, smart, handsome, irreverent, creative man my way, that would be lovely too. I promise to use whatever comes to me to generate more love and well-being to send back out into the world.
How did you hear about the 29-Day Giving Challenge?
from a friend
About me:
I'm a thirty-something artist/writer/actress who grew up partly in Israel, partly in US. It's important to me to do work that connects people to each other and to the planet, across boundaries and borders. Love to create beautiful spaces for living and community, as well as painting, making jewelry, and writing fiction, poetry, plays with kids and adults as well as on my own. I can offer design advice and DIY suggestions as well as actual things, and I love to cook healthy, yummy food, brainstorm, organize spaces, and edit manuscripts too.

Day 8, Round 2: A poem for peace

Posted on January 5, 2009 at 1:00pm 1 Comment

Hello, Lovelies. Sabriyah (a Muslim American woman now living in the UAE) and I (Jewish woman who grew up in Israel, now living in California) have started writing outside this site, exploring the possibility of creating peace and poetry together. We are both scared, but very excited about what might unfold. Sabriyah and I both believe that our traditions and prophets support efforts for peace, which is a wonderful place to start.

I'll close today by sending you all one of my… Continue

Day 5, Round 2: Peace in the Middle East brought about by 29-Gifts? Anything is possible!

Posted on January 2, 2009 at 10:30am 5 Comments

Just a quick post, motivated by Sabriyah, another 29-gifter, reaching out to me. Now as lovely as Sabriyah's gesture would be under any circumstances, what makes this special is that Sabriyah is Arab-American living in the UAE and I am Jewish and grew up partly in Israel, though I now live in the States. We are both writers and artists and care deeply about creating peace in the world.

Sabriyah offered me her friendship, and that is a beautiful gift. In return, I offered her my… Continue

Starting Over (getting back up on the proverbial horse)

My friend and teacher, K, said recently that I'm still not committing fully to myself, and that the lack of support I sometimes feel from others is a reflection of that compromised commitment to myself. Today, after reading what Cami's teacher Mbali wrote about giving and the agreements we make about giving, I realized that I have to examine the agreements I've made with myself and break up those that are no longer serving me. This has ramifications for giving, too, because as Mbali wrote far… Continue

Days 22-26: It's all about love, sweet love!

Posted on November 4, 2008 at 12:32am 0 Comments

I just realized that Day 29 will actually fall (drum roll please!) on my birthday, November 6. That's just wild. And really nice. And somehow exactly right. What would be even better? If Day 27 (that's tomorrow) would be the day the first African American President is elected. That would be the best gift I can imagine.

Although I've been engaged in giving in a variety of ways while doing this challenge, I've spent most of my time recently phonebanking from home, calling folks all… Continue

Day 21: The devil really is in the details, and other ways of finding the true gifts

Posted on October 29, 2008 at 1:05am 0 Comments

Today was a day of small, but important revelations. I was offered the possibility of some editing work by someone I met recently. Although the work was not really what I most hoped to be doing, it had the potential to bring in good money, and it was writing-related, so it seemed like the universe was bringing me what I needed. Over the weekend, events transpired that showed me that the person who offered the work and I would be best off as friends rather than business associates. In the past,… Continue

Hi Lili. Also very moved by your accepting me as a friend. I know we all have to be open and that peace starts with each of us. I would love to learn more about your peace efforts and writing facilitation. Actually I am an European-American Muslim, but here in the UAE I try to teach awareness and understanding and acceptance to my mostly Arab students- which is far more important than their English language skills. It is especially hard to teach them that the Jewish people are not an enemy since most have never known anyone who is Jewish. There is the problem of xenophobia and prejudice. Our commonalities are far greater than our differences and we can make peace a reality. If enough people get this truth then the governments will have no choice but to follow. I like Cami's suggestion of a site for this work- that is a future goal. I agree that working with adults is scary, but after all, it is (some) adults who are allowing the youth to join awareness movements. One step at a time. Thank God we both took a first step. That's 2 for peace.

Happy birthday, Lili, and congratulations on finishing your 29 days. I really enjoyed your election day post and your touching stories of connecting with people through your work on Obama's campaign. (I recently moved to NC from San Francisco, so I can appreciate the prespective from both coasts). The Prop 8 results are disappointing, but lots of great things did happen on Nov 4, and there are millions of us ready to keep fighting the good fights.
Wishing you much joy in the year ahead. xo Katie

Lili, Thanks so much for your wonderful, supportive comments, and for your kind offer of help in finding work as an art teacher. I don't feel qualified, AT ALL, as I'm pretty much winging it myself, artistically speaking.

I'm just catching up from the past couple of days on responding to comments and I got to reading your blog posts from the beginning (which I hadn't gotten to do before). I've gotta tell you how very much I enjoy your writing style. And most of all, I am so loving the way you've been doing this 29 Days thing on so many levels... physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually. So many breakthroughs and energetic releases! How inspirational. You're putting out lots of good energy into this world. Keep on shining that light, woman! Lots of love and blessings to you - Serena

Hi, Lili,
It was good to meet you, and I hope the hypnosis (or whatever feels right to you) will be easy for you to do in this neck of the woods. I live at 1468 La Playa Street, apt. 2. You push 02 at the door. So, just whenever you want to do a session, let me know through here, or my email, flameflower@runbox.com. (Always helps not to have to find paper things in the new piles, eh?) I can do things like stopping smoking sessions, but tend to go into deeper subjects with hypnosis. Past life regressions have been something a lot of people have come to me for, and we've discovered some amazing things that cleared a lot of things up. Though the card says 45 minutes, when it comes to hypnosis, we really go until it's time to quit.

The world of academia is familiar to me more than it might seem because my ex husband is the head of the MFA program in Memphis. And at other schools where he taught, we were the ones who put up the visiting writers, showed them around, and such. Even as a freshman, my social life was the receptions at the readings. Then, I taught for six years.

It's been something on my mind a lot lately, and part of my way of working into whatever teaching means comes my way is my promotion of a genre I call Lucid Fiction in my articles, interviews, and such, and there are lots more things about that waiting in the wings to be published. I'm hoping to run a contest for lucid fiction, maybe even before a book is accepted, just based on my journal publication experience.

I don't know if there is going to be any networking we can do our our kindred quest for teaching possibilities, and the overall world of writing in San Francisco, but if anything comes up that sparks anything for either of us, we can keep our ears out. If you want to tell me anything specific that you're looking for along those lines, now, or later, I'll see what comes my way to pass along to you.

Hugs.

Hi Lili! Thanks for reading and commenting on my post. I really enjoyed reading your profile info. I think that this project is a great way for us to refocus ourselves on something positive, rather than on our own misfortunes. And it sure is a great connection of like-minded souls! Like you, I'm also in greatly changed circumstances (in last 3 months) - a very good, positive change. And I'm now doing more than ever to refocus myself on my intentions for my life. And my intentions are all about creativite-expression, love and connectivity and I can definitely use abundance and support. So I wish you all the abundance and support you need, and more!! You sound like you're a magnificently creative soul with alot of love in your heart and I know you'll receive an abundance of support from the Universe for it.
