I have recently completed my first round of the challenge and was forever changed by the whole experience, so I don't regret doing it at all. Most of my posts were very long and introspective and I…Continue
I've come across what I believe might be a valuable resource for those of us dealing with unresolved chronic pain-a CD called Mindful Meditation for Pain Relief by Jon Kabat-Zinn, founding director of the Stress Reduction Clinic and Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
Several years ago, when I was trying to help a friend cope with her anxiety as her teenage daughter was battling cancer, I took a several-session introduction to Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)-she found no merit in it at all, but I was intrigued by the concept. This CD set takes the concept one step further by instruction how to integrate the reality of constant pain into the consciousness of being in the present. It's not an easy fix and no claims are made that pain will be reduced; the idea is just to change how one's brain processes the sensations and ideas about pain. It will require weeks, if not months of constant listening to incorporate the practices into one's own life.
I do believe that conscious gift-giving is beneficial in and of itself for so many reasons; it is spoken about as one of the strategies for coping with serious stresses, illnesses and pain, but it is considered a distraction rather than truly coming to terms with really dealing with the problem-I have found this to be true in my own life and am still searching for something more. After listening to this for the past few days, I feel there might be great merit in what I've heard and intend to pursue it:

The other day at our public library, there was a huge plastic jar with the label, "Quarters for Quilts", a fundraiser for the cleaning and restoration of the La Grange Centennial Quilt, made back in 1979 by a group of local women, featuring 22 historic homes, public buildings and churches of our town. It was on permanent display at our original library, but was put into storage while our new library was…

As an update to my previous post "The Gift of a Lifetime", there's a bit more to the story that I think you will enjoy. Along our journey in CA, I learned so many things about our cousin; for me, that was one the main reasons for my joy at spending so much intensive time with her. Once of the things that surprised me was when she said she knew all her trees in the Midwest where she grew up, but wasn't all that…

This afternoon, I was behind a car with a very interesting bumper sticker that I've never seen before; being the curious sort that I am, I googled it to see what it was about.…

On December 24, 2011 my husband and I flew to Santa Ana, CA to spend Christmas with his cousin, a woman who lost both her parents by the age of 11, and has worked extremely hard and given up many things to raise her son as a single mom. This son is now a former Marine, having completed two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, married with an almost 1 year old little girl, living here in Illinois, working and going to school…

Thank you so much for your wonderful comment on my post, Linda...
Everyone has something going on in their lives. There seems to be some type of family drama everywhere..I have to kick myself sometimes and quit thinking the grass is greener on the other side. When I saw the wonderful elderly gentleman with the kind smile and the lovely bouquet on top of his cart, I just had to stop and speak with him. He did remind me of my dear father in law, not in looks, but in the apparent love and devotion for his wife. I litterally had to tell myself to buck up as i strolled on into Kroger with tears in my eyes.
I am glad you had your family together for Mother's Day..Take care, Linda...thanks again..
