Days 2-6

Day 2: On Saturday I picked up some students that needed a ride to the basketball game. After the game we all went out to Chuck E. Cheese and had a blast.Day 3: We went to a Super Bowl party and brought a bunch of soda and ice. Day 4: Only one of my students has to pay for lunch (the rest get free lunch). Her lunch account was low and I put in a few bucks without telling her.Day 5: We are a uniform school and the students are required to wear black pants. One of my students really needed a new…See More

Day 1: Funeral For a 16 Year Old

So I decided to start writing again. I make sure to still give something daily, but I just haven't posted on here. Yesterday was my day 1 to start posting again.Last night was one of the hardest nights of my life. Earlier last week a former student (who was 16) was shot and killed over some petty stuff. His funeral was last night. My first gift I gave was rides to four former students who didn't have a way to get there. The second gift I gave was the hardest. We got to the funeral home a little…See More

Days 9-10: clothes & redbox

Day 9: Yesterday I cleaned out my entire basement and packed up 3 large garbage bags full of clothing that I donated to a local homeless shelter. I even managed to part with my favorite pair of pajama pants, realizing that someone could use them more than me. Day 10: I got a text message from redbox today with a code for a free one night rental of a DVD that had to be used today. My schedule is crazy the next few days, and I knew I wouldn't be able to use it. I wrote a post-it note that said,…See More

Days 3-8: 2nd chances, supplies, pizza, clean computers, food, and baby-sitting

Day 3: I planned a Halloween party for my kids. I made them goodie bags. My gift was to two of my students who were having off days and probably shouldn't have been invited. I decided to give them second chances and let them attend. Day 4: One of my former co-workers got transferred to a different school where she had no supplies or textbooks whatsoever. My fiance and I cleaned out our garage of all of the extra teaching materials I had around and delivered them to her house. I also went to…See More

Days 28-2: Everything happens for a reason

Day 28: I bought some paint brushes on sale for one of my former students who likes art. Day 29: For the 4th, I decided to grill out for my family. I gave my dad the day off and set off to be the grill master for the day. :) My family kept joking that they would have to keep the number for the pizza place handy just in case, but they ended up loving it (I have never grilled out for my family before). Day 1: I bought one of my students a fishing magazine. He is obsessed with fishing. When I gave…See More

Profile Information

Why I'm choosing to give:
As an inner-city teacher, I see the effects of poverty and having nothing first hand. I see kids who come to school just to get two good meals a day. I see children with shirts that are dirty and full of holes. This has made me strive to give what I can, when I can.
What I'd most like to receive:
smiles and happiness :)

About me:
I am an inner-city teacher. I don't teach because it's a job, I do so because it's my passion. I love walking into work every morning and there is never a dull day. Each day I strive to give my students the tools that they need to be successful in this crazy world of ours.

Yey for GOOD teachers, the ones that care, the ones that put forth sincere effort, especially the ones who teach more than what can be found in curriculum text books. You are worth your weight in gold. I say we scrap all these award shows for actors (OK, love seeing the dresses, but really?) and start having award shows for REAL heroes that are truly impacting our lives. Bless you, Jennifer.
