Day six--most of the giving was for me, and it wasn't even from me, but it works for me!

My mommy and daddy came down to see me today! I got SPOILED ROTTEN. I loved it! I wanted to take my friend out because she's been having a rough time but she went home with her roommate. My Dad did want a new USI shirt, so I made that my give. He picked out a really nice one and I purchased it for him. It's the least I could do...though it's definitely not enough!

Not a lot happened today, but it certainly was one of my best days. Tomorrow is homework catch-up day, but I'm sure I'll… Continue

Day Five! What a wonderful day!

I was kind of in a funk earlier today. I woke up early, downed mass amounts of coffee, and went to meet the class I'll be observing the next four weeks. It was absolutely wonderful! They are 12th grade Advance Placement students! All aboard the critical thinking train!! Then it was home and straight to class. After that, the weather was totally bring me down. It is just insanely dreary here! : ( Well, I was depressed and considered not going out, but I had a previous engagement with my Resident… Continue

Worst day ever? Don't think so!

Posted on October 29, 2009 at 7:23pm 2 Comments

So. I woke up in a pretty decent mood today. I knew there was a lot to do and not a lot of time, so I got straight to work. Basically, I've been working since 730 this morning. At One PM I went to the Writer's Room, where I'm training to be a tutor. Things kind of went downhill from there. I worked with not one but two ESL (English as a Second Language) students. It's very challenging helping someone with their writing who hasn't been speaking English his entire life! I'm by no means… Continue

Day Three--A gift for me and a gift for you.

Posted on October 28, 2009 at 8:51pm 4 Comments

So I definitely gave myself the gift of a nap today, and it was WONDERFUL. I also decided to take myself in for a free check-up on campus. It was the Health and Wellness Fair, where they gave out free H1N1 vaccinations (yucky), free cholesterol checks, free blood pressure checks, etc. Knowing heart disease is the number one killer in women, and I am overweight, I thought it would be a good idea to take advantage of this opportunity. I'm happy to report everything is completely normal. : ) It… Continue

Being afraid of working with exceptional needs children is normal. Even though I eventually specialized in that area, jt was occasionally overwhelming. My son and daughter-in-law. as well as a special nephew are teachers. I know that inclusion is a push. but so is raising test scores in general. I think lots of classroom teachers have lots of conflicting priorities. It is so hard to plan for those with special needs. They are worth it though.

Patti.
I am so excited that you are close to stating your career in education. It is such a fulfilling field. I taught younger children, Kindergarten, K-6 with learning disabilities, all subjects. In my last few years of teaching, I worked with 3-6 year olds with various develomental delaysm physical, cognitive, and language. I loved working with autistic children. I am not sure that my experiences will translate well to your field, even though I love English and Literature. At one time I considered that. I was a journalism major, english minor at first. Then I had babies and fell in love with early development. I have a master's in school and vocational counseling also. I really never used it professionally, because I wouldn't leave my classroom until I got too sick to teach. I have gone through the National Board Certification process. If there is anything that I can do to help or support you, I would be honored. My nephew just finished and started teaching. I miss helping him out with school stuff.
