Day 11, Sunday. The day started out pretty quietly, since I needed a bit of recovery time from my party on Saturday night. Besides that, it was Father's Day. Dad got the requisite cards, and the t-shirt for his special day. But when you're working with a man who buys what he wants, when he wants it, its hard to do more than that for him. Sunday afternoon was Cancer Survivor Day at the Columbus Zoo. Danielle and I packed ourselves off in the car and made the quick trip down there. Everything was… Continue

Day 10....Amazing

Posted on June 14, 2008 at 12:00pm 1 Comment

This was Day 10. I received in tenfold what I gave. Today was my surprise party. I helped get everything ready. I took my SarahPumpkin to the Movies. She loved it, but I think she and I could have sat two hours in a cardboard box and she would love it, because we would be together. I hate this visitation cycle....It sucks!!! But anyway..... The party was amazing.......

I had to share. Today, this afternoon, my family and friends threw a "surprise" party for my birthday. I had the… Continue

8 and 9....this seems to be flying by

Day 8, Thursday. Not much going on today. Danielle and I did manage to sneak in a little retail therapy. I got her some clothes not only for summer but also for back to school. After we got home, I doggie sat for my dad. He had a date. His first since losing my mom in January. It was good for him. He went out with an old friend. So I guess both of those qualify, even though it didn't feel like I did anything....Maybe giving is getting easier?

Day 9, Friday. Today we spent the day… Continue

Day 6 and 7....most memorable.

Tuesday was day 6. The doctor's office. It was time for my weekly follow up with my plastic surgeon. I knew it was going to be painful when the stitches came out....However it was nothing like I had anticipated. I held my breath and took the pain. When it was over, I touched the nurses hand and assured her that I knew she had to do what was necessary. I smiled and gave her a hug. I honestly think that because I have been on both sides of the hospital bed, I"m a much better nurse. I know what… Continue

Day 1 through 5

Posted on June 9, 2008 at 5:44pm 7 Comments

I should have started blogging sooner, I know......but I would sit here and say I'm gonna get it done, and then I never did......I'm bad about that. I should probably work on it.

Anyway Day 1.....very simply. It was my Birthday. I think that was a very fitting day to begin giving to others. Although it was a very uneventful day, as most birthdays are at this point in life, I was able to make a huge impact on someone very dear to me. After being off work for two months and having no… Continue

Hi Gail - thank you for your email. Did you get my reply? I am in my good week at the moment and I had a lovely day today with my boy - went to the local park with his best friend and they splashed around in the paddling pool. I miss swimming (bad thing about picc line), and am really looking forward to getting back in the water. Take care of you x sarah

Gail - My thoughts are with you. I am two years past my chemo and growing more whole every day. I can see that's what you're up to, too. Thanks for joining the HumanKind media group and for the lovely posts.

Dear Princess Gail - I left a comment about day 6 and 7 and then I wanted to say more, so here it is. I am 3/4 way through my chemo for breast cancer, with surgery to follow. I don't know what order they are doing you in. Some of my chemo has been administered by a friend who is a chemo nurse and has now had a bilateral mastectomy, and it has been great having her there, partly because no matter how much anyone else sympathises ( and all the chemo nurses are lovely), she really knows. So I think you're right, it does change what you can give in a professional capacity. Even for me (I'm a child psychiatrist) it has really made me think about what it's like for my patients to come and see me.

On the days just following chemo I get so tired. It is really hard to give anything at all, especially to my kids, who are 6 and 4, so pretty small and who seem to demand more the less available I am. I have found that the giving challenge has made me give myself a bit of space to think about what I CAN do, rather than what I CAN'T do, and that has been really helpful. The other thing I have found helpful is www.threebeautifulthings.blogspot.com. I have been trying to spend a few minutes at bedtime just noting my 3 beautiful things for the day, and find it really helpful to focus on the positives for a few minutes. Just getting to 3 is not burdensome and it really lifts me just before I go to sleep. I am not a spiritual person, but for me it is like a mini meditation or a prayer.

Hope that all goes well for you and sending you some prayers, well wishes, love and caring for yourself.

Thank you Gail. I gave my first gift last night. I was tempted this morning to stop and give a young man (homeless) some money this morning...Probably should have.
