you are right that we women rarely talk about such things and keeping secrets causes us so much unnecessary shame and torment. i really respect you for having the courage to speak out. i will have to find and read that book. Hugs, Dawn

It's amazing how even when we can't do what we thought was so important, like starting your own food drive, that we can often be presented with a different option that works just as well or even better. Great job, Rachel!

Days Twenty-Two and Twenty-Three: Being Honest and Being Available

On day twenty-two, I finished reading Kerry Cohen's Loose Girl: A Memoir on Promiscuity. I was inspired by the author's unflinching honesty and self-awareness throughout the book. She told stories about her sexual history that were heartbreaking and got to the very root of why she, and maybe a lot of other girls, have sex for all the wrong reasons. Why don't women talk about things like that? I don't consider my past particularly promiscuous and yet there was so much material I could relate to…See More

What a beautiful gift! You certainly came through one way or another. Yes it is amazing that a little goes a long way sometimes. Makes us realize the sufferings of others and how lucky we are. Wonderful giving =0)

Day Twenty-One: Food Drive

My ambitious plan for November was to get my condo association involved in a door-to-door food drive. I had it all mapped out, how I'd collect pantry items weekly from outside the eighteen front doors of the residents of our building, how I could post a little success chart (pounds of food collected, perhaps) by the back door where everyone could see it. I was so excited! I sent out an email to our association's board to make sure I was allowed to solicit for donations via an email on our…See More

Days Nineteen and Twenty: Family Time

On Friday, I had every intention of getting to the shipping store to send away a few packages I'd wrapped up. My son's afternoon nap, however, was almost four hours instead of his usual 60 minutes. By the time he'd woken up, I was still in my pajamas and it was already full dark. I didn't have much time to get us all put together and out the door!I hurried up to the shower, leaving my son in the care of Dora the Explorer. Getting out, I realized I'd forgotten to get a towel and all I had within…See More

Please let me know if you come up with an idea! You did such a loving thing for her. Bless you. It is so hard to read some of these stories because you want to help so many. She is definetely in need though.

Profile Information

Why I'm choosing to give:
As a stay-at-home mom, I feel my impact on the world to be diminished. My son is a delight and I'm proud of him but I also can't help but feel like I'm investing everything into his life and selling away my own. I don't need a job to feel important but I do need to reclaim my sense of worth and connection to my community.
What I'd most like to receive:
I'd like to receive a better sense of self and self-worth, to reengage with my life, to press against my self-imposed boundaries, and to learn what it feels like when I follow my heart and convictions. I want to matter and I want my life to have purpose and compassionate passion.
How did you hear about the 29-Day Giving Challenge?
Through a blogger some time ago. Lately, though, I was reintroduced to the idea when I found the book as the perfect gift to myself for my birthday.
About me:
I'm the wife of a very successful and supportive husband, mother to a delightful two year-old boy. I travel frequently and enjoy the benefits of being a stay-at-home mom. I'm a practicing witch and psychic working to balance the mundane demands of parenting a toddler with my desire for greater and continued spiritual growth. I tend to be solitary, a bit shy, and live in a very big city without the support of local friends or family.

Day Eighteen: Free on CraigsList

Posted on November 13, 2009 at 4:47am 2 Comments

Looking to be of service to a local family, I packed up the last material reminders of my son's life as an infant. Five paper grocery bags were soon bulging with clothing, board books, rattles, teethers, plush animals and even his adorable little baby piano. Surveying the house afterwards, I noticed his little-used rocking horse and decided to add that to the bunch. I posted an ad to the FREE section of my city's Craigslist.org and waited for a reply.

Within minutes, my inbox was… Continue

wow, Rachel! i read your first blog and you seem to have come naturally to some insights it has taken me months in this challenge to arrive at. i am so glad you decided to join us. i grew up in Chicago and know from experience that it is easy to feel invisible in such a large place and especially so since you don't have an outside job or school to bring you into contact with others. i hope you find what you are looking for, you have so much to offer your community. welcome to the 29 Gifts family! Hugs, Dawn
