Round 11. Wow. I started last August, so it's about ten months total of giving. And I love it. I thought about taking a day off between rounds, as I've done occasionally, but I want to keep the momentum going (and at this point, the day just doesn't feel right if I haven't given something). By late afternoon, no opportunities had come up, so I went to the grocery store and saw that a woman was returning juice bottles. I was able to slip a gift card to the cashier and ask her to give it to the…See More

Today started as a difficult day, and most of the day I was in a bad mood. I took bread to the soup kitchen, then came home and went back to bed. That kind of day.In the late afternoon, I hadn't given anything (besides the bread), and with few opportunities popping up, I decided to pay ahead for an ice cream cone - a single one, since the couple who owns the shop still hasn't given away the one my sister paid for six weeks ago, and it seems easier for them to give away in pairs. Part of the…See More

Today's gift was a good one: my neighbour needed a new laptop; hers was her mothers and is now eight years old (!!), but she knows nothing about computers (really...nothing), so I did some research for her, then I went with her to the store so I could ask the important questions and advise her. I think she wound up getting a really good deal and - given that I wasn't able to turn her to the Mac side - a pretty good laptop for her needs. The store is setting up the whole thing for her, with the…See More

Thank you all for your continued support - I really appreciate it! Yesterday (D19) was a minimal giving day: I left a loonie (dollar) in a washroom. Today (D20) was a holiday, so not much was open. I was also in a funky mood - the Zen of the past few days was kind of washed away by clouds and rain. By this evening, I hadn't given anything (other than letting a woman go ahead of me at a coffee shop and telling my neighbour I'd help her set up a new email account). And I didn't feel like giving…See More

What a day (unfortunately, I don't mean that in a positive way). My only gift was some change to an old homeless man - and some conversation.Several challenges came up, for me and people I care about. First and least was a nasty email from my half-brother, who is now 80. We've never been close (since we're 35 years apart in age), though he's never before been mean to me. It was just a very snarky, accusing and petty email; I responded with what I thought was calm compassion (not easy) and a few…See More

Yesterday was a good giving day; today a little less so. D14 - I ran into a painter as I was walking, and he needed water for his paints. So I poured some from my bottle into a little dish. Then I went to pick up bread for the soup kitchen, and I stopped at the dollar store. I bought a gift card and asked the manager to give it to someone who could use it. This one took a little bit of explaining - both cashiers and the manager looked at me like "Huh?" but eventually, she understood. I'd wanted…See More

My commitment to giving as frequently as possible continued yesterday (D12). I saw a man with a sign saying he was hitchhiking across Canada and... I couldn't read the rest of the sign, but he looked like he could use some food. So I gave him the grocery gift card I had. He was ecstatic. I've never had a grocery card recipient who was that visibly happy. It felt really good to be someone else's miracle. He said he hadn't eaten in two days, though I saw him throughout the day, and he said he…See More

I'm having a hard time. Even after the miracle yesterday, I'm still feeling really down. I know there's a lesson here; I know there's growth here, but I don't yet know what it is. Leonard Cohen's line about (I paraphrase) "Everything has cracks in it; that's how the light gets in" keeps coming to mind. So despite a hugely productive morning and taking another step in my Financial Situation, I spent the…See More

R10, D6, D7 & D8 ... + *OMG*

I've been too tired to post the past couple of days, and I've also been feeling depressed and fragile... but they were good ones, giving-wise. Today I also received something I can only describe as a miracle and the direct result of 10 months of giving, which also helped boost my mood. But more about that in a minute :)D6 (Monday) - I started by paying ahead for somebody's coffee, an old standby that I now do "just in case nothing else comes up." Then I walked by a homeless girl I've seen and…See More

Yesterday, a cruise ship was in town, which is always a time of great opportunity - tourists looking for directions, photos, etc. I took two tourist photos, gave my indigent friend half my coffee, placed a $5 grocery gift card in the washroom nearest the store - yes, washroom stealth gives are back! - and then gave a guy at the bus stop the change I had in my pocket for fare (it wasn't enough, but it was all I had). My upstairs neighbour has been sick, and today she asked me to buy her some…See More

This was not my most stellar giving day. Or any kind of stellar day. I was irritated, annoyed and grumpy. There were opportunities I didn't take - the buskers who (in my grumpiness) were making too much noise for me to sit and read, the tourists taking pictures who were (in my grumpiness) blocking the path, the elderly people and young kids moving (in my grumpiness) too slowly, the young man sitting with a cardboard sign... all my judginess came out.

Eventually I came home…

So I did go to Victoria (the provincial capital) last night, and I stayed in a hostel, ate some really good take-out and generally just called it "Project Distraction." I'm definitely not a city person, and it didn't solve anything, but it was a pretty good...distraction.

On the way down, my neighbour wanted to get a frozen cappuccino, and though I don't drink it - pure chemicals - normally, I'd offer to pay. She wouldn't let me, though she did ask me to buy it for her while…

This round has flown by (I think I've said that about the past several rounds, but this one really feels like it). Giving is so ingrained in me now that I can't imagine NOT doing it, albeit sometimes to greater or lesser extents, depending on the day and opportunities.

Today was a pretty good round-finale: I took bread to the soup kitchen, left a toonie ($2 coin) at the top of a structure on the playground, for a kid to find, made a small donation to the food bank and bought a…

i've been to BC, back in 1980. it was beautiful. and my youngest son just went up to Victoria a few months ago to interview for a PhD program at the University in Victoria...it was quite a culture change for him but he enjoyed it immensely :-)  he was disappointed not to be accepted but there's always next year.

wishing you a most wonder-mous week ahead, chockful of happy surprises. Hugs, Dawn

May today there be peace within.  May you trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be.  May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith in yourself and others.  May you use the gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you.  May you be content with yourself just the way you are.  Let this knowledge settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love.  It is there for each and every one of us."
