Day 20-- challah and Family House small donation and getting set for charity half-marathon....

Yesterday when making challah (breaded bread for the Sabbath meal) for our Shabbat dinner, I opted to make 6 small braided loaves instead of two large ones. It's just my husband and myself at home right now, and I like to freeze some for Shabbats where I might be too busy to bake fresh. AND I used to regularly give away a couple of small challah loaves to people at our synagogue who I thought could use a boost or a lift. So today I did that again-- and whenever I do this, I like to think that…See More

Day 16 & 17... gifts of shoveling snow, helping a student, listening to another student, giving myself a *bedtime*, and more...

Yesterday I had several sweet times for focused giving. A young brilliant student I evaluate for homeschooling suddenly needed me to complete a recommendation form for him for a possible summer program-- the family was clearly VERY worried that I just wouldn't have time to meet the VERY tight deadline involved. I assured them I would be able to-- and I *did*... got everything needed off in the mail today. This boy especially touches my heart, as he has a severe and very challenging…See More

Days 12 & 13.... some gifts for myself, and for others.....

These have been my 'recovery' days from intensive and wonderful visits over the holidays with many different family members. I yesterday gave the gift to my departing grandkids of really thanking them for being here, giving the older ones special goodbye's, recalling all the special times we'd had together over the week, and thinking ahead to ways to stay in touch. We were able to give my son and family a gift of willingly keeping their old dog for a few days while they travel to visit another…See More

Day 8, 9, 10, and 11..... whooo.... busy days!!!

These days have been filled with lots of family visits and lots of times for giving... As the days have 'blurred' a bit in my mind, I'm not going to try to separate out the days too much here... just record times for giving (and receiving!).Today we received a wonderful gift from our farmer neighbor-- he drove down to our farm with his tractor and plow, and just voluntarily plowed our long driveway :-). I raced out to give him a quart jar of our own farm maple syrup as a thank you gift -- he…See More

Day 5 & 6 & 7.... more time with my grandkids :-), and more....

Busy last couple of days.... lots of family visits... and as we are Jewish, Friday was big for us as it was Shabbat, and we had lots of family visiting.... That night my gift was making a wonderful full dinner, being especially careful to make lots of food my daughter-in-law with many food allergies could eat so that she could really enjoy herself. We also happily held dinner till my son and daughter-in-law arrived back home (they are Catholic, but love Jewish traditions also, and had spent the…See More

Day 19.... giving the gift of listening....

Posted on January 8, 2010 at 9:21am 1 Comment

Well, today I had a lovely phone counseling call with a homeschool mom, asking a question about high school and her youngest son. I *could* have answered very briefly and gotten back to my 'other work', but I took some time, and asked further questions, shared some stories of families in similar situations, asked about their family business, and finally asked if she might write an article for our homeschooling publication.... This mom was really appreciative, said several times how much she'd… Continue

A week and a half ago I went online to check out books related to giving... and found a true gem, and wanted to share it with everyone here. It's called "Why Good Things Happen to Good People: How to Live a Healthier, Happier Life by the Simple Act of Giving" by Stephen Post, PhD and Jill Neimark. The authors even have a website: www.whygoodthingshappen.com (I've just taken my first peek at the site...).
