Day 7 - Lunch Date

Posted on August 27, 2008 at 1:38pm 1 Comment

Today I ran into a fellow at lunch that I met at a campaign function earlier this year. We had exchanged business cards, but never followed up with each other. I saw him sitting a table at lunch by himself and asked to join him. Brannen is about 10 years younger than me and is Korean. We had a fascinating conversation about politics and his heritage, race, and culture. Brannen was adopted by an Italian-American family who raised him and his sister, both adopted from Korea. He laughed about his… Continue

Day 6 - Feedback from the Universe

Posted on August 26, 2008 at 7:50pm 2 Comments

I was at the grocery store a few days ago and ran into an acquaintance of mine, Karen (she's a friend of the coach I talked about in Day 5). I recognized Karen and walked up to her to tell her how happy I was to see her and gave her a big hug. I thought nothing of it, other than it was nice to see her again. Well, you never know what impact your words or actions have a person's life...

Karen told my coach how much she appreciated my acknowledgment of her. She said that I was an… Continue

Day 5 - Breakfast

Posted on August 26, 2008 at 7:44pm 1 Comment

I had the pleasure today of treating a dear friend, mentor and coach to breakfast. She had been out of town for the past month and I really missed her support, counsel and friendship. We got together at her favorite spot to have breakfast and catch up. It was delightful. And when the check came, I was so happy to take care of the bill. I got so much joy from showing my appreciation to her in that manner. It was a simple gift, and I think it meant more to me than it did to her.

Day 4 - Nothing to Give

Posted on August 26, 2008 at 7:41pm 1 Comment

Today I focused on getting ready to get the boys back in school. I ran errands, cleaned and turned my attention to the upcoming school year. Then I started thinking about what I had to give...It's interesting that so often I think of giving as an act of material exchange. This challenge has helped me to see giving much more broadly. Like when I let someone driving over into my lane in traffic, that is giving too. Or when I smile at a stranger and compliment their dress. Or when I tell a team… Continue

Day 3 - The Homeless Guy

Posted on August 22, 2008 at 9:49pm 2 Comments

I did not know I had so much negative self talk about giving money to homeless people...and I consider myself a fairly open, compassionate and optimistic woman...But when a person (who looks like a beggar) asks me for money, I completely shut down...But not today...Well, at first I did...but then I realized this was my opportunity to give. The man walked up to me while I was pumping gas. I immediately went into a defensive mode, silently hoping he wouldn't ask for money, say something vulgar,… Continue
