Day 1

Today I spent time talking to my friends online and to my family, encouraging them and telling them how I feel about them. I slowed down enough to really listen to what was important to them and to respond to them in empathy in regard to their lives. It felt good to not be in a hurry.

Profile Information

Why I'm choosing to give:
Because I have a tendency to keep everything to myself and I would like to be a more giving person.
What I'd most like to receive:
Insight and wisdom as I practice this principle of giving and receiving. I would like to see this in action.
How did you hear about the 29-Day Giving Challenge?

About me:
I am a woman in my mid 50's. I am married and have three grown children, one still at home. My mother is living with us full time, as she has Alzheimer's. I am her full time caregiver. This time of taking care of my mother has been the hardest thing I have done. I need to develop other avenues of giving and connection for my own piece of mind.

Day 5

Posted on December 2, 2009 at 11:26pm 2 Comments

Today I am continuing to read to my mother the book 29 Gifts and the other two books we have selected to read. I think it continues to bless both my mother and me. Also, I am not so disciplined about putting dinner on the table for my family nightly, so for today and yesterday also, I gave the gift of having a home cooked meal on the table. It is one of the things I do for my husband that helps him to feel loved and I don't do it often enough. So the gift of cooking for my family gave back to… Continue

Day 4

Posted on December 2, 2009 at 8:00am 2 Comments

As I continue in this adventure my heart is lightening up considerably. Again, I decided to give the gift of slowing down enough to listen. It is truly a gift to listen. One person had a heavy heart and really needed to release some of her burden. Another was just ecstatic to take a moment to say hello because she hadn't seen me in years. I was still stirring inside to get going because I have this internal motor that hums at a high speed, but I coached myself to slow down and be a blessing to… Continue

Day 3

Posted on December 1, 2009 at 9:44am 1 Comment

While at the bookstore I picked up the 29 Gifts book and I started reading it aloud with my mother. I am giving the gift of reading this book to my mother as she can no longer read because of her eyesight and her cognitive skills. I am also reading two other books with her, including one that will help spark her cognitive skills and the other involves the history of the state we are from. It is time well spent together, which is also another gift.

Day 2

Posted on November 30, 2009 at 8:42pm 1 Comment

I went to my daughter's work and I gave a book to charity through her bookstore. I did it because I know there are a lot of children who don't own a book. I was a grade school librarian and the kids got such a kick out of owning their own books. I also donated a book because my daughter is in a competition to get donated books and I wanted to help her with that. I think by doing this challenge I realize that I am already giving a lot. I am just more aware of when I give.

hi, Vmlls4! welcome to the 29 Gifts family. i think you are on the right track about developing other avenues of giving and connection - it's a hard thing to be the primary caregiver and tends to isolate you. i've made a lot of caring friends here over the past few months and i believe you will, too. enjoy the journey! Hugs, Dawn
