Giving Notes from Days 21 - 24

Day 21: Gift to my family of purging our house of processed "non-food" items. No more packages in the house with lists of ingredients that I can't pronounce, never mind know what they are, and what they are doing to our bodies. We didn't have a lot of it around to begin with, but I just wanted it out of our house so we can "clean-up" our eating acts and focus on eating organic, whole foods.Day 22: Josh and I gave our spare change to the Pennies for Peace collection jar at his school. This is…See More

Day 13: Give of a Lifetime

If you've been following my blog, you know that my family and I arrived in Maui yesterday. We are here for a very special reason: to celebrate my father-in-law's 70th birthday.Back in July, my mother-in-law (who you'll soon all wish was your MIL), started planning for my FIL's birthday in January. She wanted to do something big, and something he wouldn't expect to celebrate such a milestone. She decided to book a family trip to Maui. So, the planning began. We plotted our flights, she…See More

Day 10: Good Karma

Today was a day filled with good karma. We loaded the kids into the car bright and early to start our trek across the country. After two flights, we landed in Los Angeles in the early evening (well past bedtime for us tho). The last time we flew, we had a horrible experience. People wouldn't help or accommodate us at all. Traveling with three small kids is not easy given all the gear you have to lug around while trying to anticipate their every need in unfamiliar circumstances to avoid…See More

Days 8 & 9: Super Quick Post

The past few days have been crazy busy as we prepare for a special event. As a result, I haven't had much time to invest in gift giving - although I have been looking like a maniac when I'm out and about (perhaps I'm looking to hard and that's why no opportunities have presented themselves). My gives for the past two days have been very simple. Day 8: A framed photo for my kids and my nephew on the first day of school. It was given to my mom who left for a 3 month vacation in Florida this…See More

Day 20: Homecoming

Posted on January 20, 2010 at 6:22pm 0 Comments

My gift today is our homecoming and the night time rituals that go along with it. The kids were so excited to be home tonight. Bree was chatting away about sleeping in her own bed when we got home, and seeing the dog and the cat. Once we got in the door, the kids exploded with energy (despite having travelled two straight days, for roughly 11+ hours each day). My gift to them was their bedtime routine of PJ's, teeth brushing, family bedtime stories and then getting tucked in. For my son, we… Continue

Day 19: Haiti

When we arrived in Maui for the start of our vacation, there was a sign outside the Hertz building that said you were welcome to use any of the items in the box below during your stay. They were items that previous travelers had used and parted with - like nearly full containers of sunscreen, a styrofoam picnic container, etc. I had planned to leave my bottle of laundry detergerent in this box for others to use. But, planned giving doesn't seem to go my way. We were rushed to return the car and… Continue

Day 18: Parting Gifts

Posted on January 20, 2010 at 5:52pm 0 Comments

Today was our last day in Maui. We're leaving the island at 6:00 am on Tuesday. It will be so dark, that we won't see any of the natural beauty of the island. As I've noted since the start of our trip, my in-laws have generously given throughout our stay in Maui. The first gift was the gift of the trip itself, followed by purchasing numerous family excursions for us to go on and meals, as well as little gifts along the way for the kids and us like t-shirts, trinkets, a beautiful hawiian… Continue

Hi.....thanks for commenting....I just figured out where to post this. I think we can just put out to the universe that we'd like to receive opportunities that essentially hit us over the head. Like an "opportunity alert" that gets in our face and then we take some spontaneous action. Or perhaps it's just about us being more open to seeing people differently and creating our own opportunities.
