former shelterdweller posted a blog postI am out of the shelter and on my way back to Oregon. Being persistent has finally paid off. In May I finally won my case against SS to get " surviving spouse" benefits and was awarded 6 month back pay. So I could upgrade my car and was able to move to a (HUD sponsored) hotel for women, with my own room. No more 40 women in a dorm on bunk beds, living out of tiny lockers. That was a big step up and I think also the turning point for me. It seems after that everything fell into place.
However I feel like these 3 years were not a total waste. I did complete my Business communication requirements but since then I have changed my major to Forestry, specifically environment and endangered species habitat preservation. As some of you know I have taken most of my required animal science classes, but still need environmental law and soil science for the degree. I do have to finish my Algebra course, it is one of the gen. ed. requirements for transfer and my prof. has been extremely helpful and given me till the end of the fall semester to finish.

Well I have been back in Portland for a little over a week and I LOVE it. The first couple of days were sunny and in the high 90ties, it was a little disappointing, I just left that kind of weather in Bakersfield, but true to form it did not last and on the third morning I woke up to a light drizzle, a little fog and I knew I was home.
My kitties are in various stages of adjusting to "mom" being back, Nudge, my (not so) little Savannah boy is velcro kitty, glued to the hip, the girls…

Had a great weekend in LA, did sooo many fun things!!! Least of all went to my favorite Sushi Bar TWICE......how cool is that! Had to stop back in Bakersfield to pick up the rest of my stuff from my friends house, had to deal with a punctured tire and a mix-up of paperwork at the college (had to get all that fixed so I don't lose any credits) Now one day later than planned and after a tearful good bye with my friend Jerri and her cat Smokie, I am finally on the road. The car is filled to the…

I am finally leaving B-field tomorrow and going to LA to spend the weekend with Robin (David's stepbrother and my best friend of 20 years) and his Grandmother. Originally I planned on just spending a day in LA before heading for Oregon but I really don't want to start my trek on Labor day weekend.
My car is almost packed, I have several boxes of my textbooks and notebooks and am tossing several yoga pants and a few T-shirts and a Hoodie in a duffel and wearing Birkies. The only other…

Blackie's stool sample came back clean, but he still has " the runs". Taking him to the vet at this point would traumatize him way too much and probably do more harm than good and the vet agrees I saw him yesterday and he is hanging in there, his "parents" are giving him Greek yogurt, and mixing cooked rice along with antibiotics in his canned food.
Poor baby is actually in better shape than when he showed up 2 years ago. His paws were raw and bloody for almost a year and he would…
