Day Twenty-Four: Bye Bye Books

Uber short today, sorry.

I like books. And I like owning them. But this morning, I called my brother over to my room so that he can take some of by old books and donate it to the Book Drive that his homeroom adviser conducted in school this whole…

Errand Day

It's Errand Day. The day formally known as Saturday. And I started it off at 5:30 a.m. While typing this, I decided to look up the word errand in Webster's New World College Dictionary. The first definition struck a chord with me, "a trip to carry a message or do a definite thing, often esp. for someone else." That's what I'm doing today, making a trip to do something for someone else. By 8:00 I'll be 15 miles away from home, transporting someone to the grocery store who is unable to drive.…

June 3 - Driving Miss Jennifer

it was about three o'clock in the afternoon and i hadn't given anything yet. suddenly the phone rang. it was Mama, saying that Jennifer had just called her and asked if she would come pick her up and take her to the ER because she had a headache. now, first of all, Mama will be 80 next month and secondly, she has a hard time getting in and out of her truck because of her artificial hips and knee, and thirdly, she had just got home after paying all her bills and grocery shopping since the 3rd…

Day 22--An offer to drive & Xmas cards

My colleague who had surgery mentioned that he was going to the doctor on Friday. After I hung up it occurred to me that he needs a ride. I called him this morning & offered to drive him. He declined my offer but at least he knows we're here to help.

Today I made out Xmas cards for the various divisions & branches of the Library. Some sections fall within the divisions so I made out cards for the smaller sections as well.

A happy dog and a full heart

Henry left early this beautiful Sunday morning to take his mother to church. My car was behind his and needed to be moved. I quickly volunteered. On the various occasions I perform this mini-gift to my husband, I gift our dog, Jack, with a ride around the neighborhood before returning to our daily rituals.

It's very hot and humid here in Houston, but we had such a lovely breeze, I rolled down ALL the windows - not just Jack's - and turned…

Drive through ditch

The golden rule has always seemed a little selfish to me.

I love to do things for other people in part because there’s a buzz I get when I do volunteer work, for example, that makes me feel good about myself. It’s not selfless at all. It’s intentional kindness and I always feel like I get just as much out of it when I volunteer or do something nice as the people I’m trying to help—maybe even more.

But in doing the 29 Gifts Challenge I wanted to try to be randomly… Continue

No more counting (a gift to me)

Lucky me. I got hit with another stomach bug. I think it was sodium overload from some not-so-great fish sauce we bought at the China Market this past weekend. My tummy was not happy. I'm better now, save for a few random grumbles down below. At any rate, I missed out a few days blogging ... again. Honestly, I think I was feeling - and succombing to - the pressure of daily blogging. Yes, it is therapuetic, but also just a bit ... well ... stressful trying to come up with something worthwhile to… Continue

Battling IRR

I have a disease called IRR (nothing to do with my bowels!): Internal Road Rage. Ok, I made it up. But it is something I'm not proud of. I don't outwardly react to what I call the sub-par driving of others, but I do let it get to me. It has been downgraded (by me... it's my made up disease remember!) from full-blown RR, so that's a plus. But it still flares up now and then. OK, the analogies are getting gross.

Anyway, as today's gift and as a start to something new for me, I decided… Continue
