The kids (especially the 13 year old) had a tricky time with this today. My girls thought hard about their day and remembered something they had done throughout their day.
Kiera picked up an eraser that the girl next to her in school had dropped on the floor and couldn't reach.
Iliana left for school later than usual in the morning because the neighbor kid wanted to ride his bike to school w/ her, "I gave my time" is what she said.
Nathaniel made Kiera's bed for her.
I encouraged the kids to watch for things to do for others (like picking up things people drop, writing notes, drawing pictures, etc.)
As for me I sent pictures of the kids to their father. I know it may seem ridiculous but there are some really hard feelings w/ him. He's 10,000 behind and child support and rarely sees the kids. I had originally decided that I'd send their school pictures when he started paying child support. Well.....I decided to send them now as my gift for the day.
Now, for the practice in receiving part, my boyfriend and I went grocery shopping and he paid for all my groceries. It was extremely difficult to not feel guilty about letting him do it. I felt so much anxiety about it but I made myself accept his gift and enjoy not paying for groceries (after the anxiety left). I reminded myself that he wants to give, too.
