29 Day Giving Challenge: Day 4
My day today was kinetic. Is it just me or is everyone feeling this quickening? We're only 4 days in and things are just happenin'!
I knew today was going to be a busy day wherever I went because most everyone is just now coming back from the holiday break. I was in line at the bank at 4pm today and the place was teeming with bodies. The man behind me said, "What is everyone doing here? Shouldn't these people all be at work?" Yes people, you heard the man. Abandon your errands! Go back to work!
Gifts O' The Day:
I gave the man who was standing in line behind me at the bank my place in line because he was in one heck of a rush. I wasn't. Any standing around time I have gives me more time to play with my Blackberry. Sure, go right ahead, mister. No problem.
I saw a car in the parking lot at the grocery store that had left it's lights on so I told one of the guys who worked there to announce it over the loud speaker in the store. No need for someone to come out with a cart full of groceries and be greeted by a dead battery.
I noticed this big trailer sitting at one end of the parking lot. It had a picture of a man and a dog on it, but for the life of me I couldn't figure out what it was. There was a woman standing outside of the trailer looking in towards whatever she could see through the small window. She had a cute little baby strapped to the front of her body. I walked up to her and asked her what the trailer was and what she was waiting for and she told me it's a mobile free/low cost veterinary service and she had a dog inside that was being operated on for a cancer in his foot!
The organization is
The Sam Simon Foundation and they do free animal surgeries one day a week and they do free spaying and neutering three days per week! You can call them up and tell them what's going on with your pet and when they come to a location near you you can pack your dog or cat or whatever up in the car and they'll care for it! How awesome is that?
The woman told me her name, which I've forgotten, but the adorable baby's name was Lillian and they were waiting for their black Labrador to come out of surgery, his name is Story. So I had a lovely time chatting with them and I told the woman I would pray for Story and for her family and I got flyers and information on the Sam Simon Foundation which I will pass along to the Animal Kinship ministry at Agape. I have a full page of referrals for other free and low cost vet services as well. I knew there was a reason I was drawn to that trailer!
When I got home I got a voice mail from one of my practitioner friends who told me she had been to the Huntington Library and there was an exhibit up about jazz music from the 30's - 50's. My father was a jazz musician during the golden age of West Coast jazz and she said one of the letters on exhibit was from a musician who was telling the receiver of the letter to contact my father. She left me more details in the message, but wow... that's wild.
My father died of complications following a hit and run car accident in 1969, so he hasn't been in my life for a very long time. The cool thing is that every now and again something comes through from someone about him or I am standing in line somewhere and someone out of the blue will start talking to me and I'll find out they knew my father.
The whole deal with my dad is a much longer story than I'll get into here, but it's always cool when these tidbits drift in to shore to me. I always get that he's still around, still smiling and winking at me from another dimension. In many ways I feel like I have a better relationship with him now than I did when he was alive, because now he has no worries and plenty of time to play jokes on me from the great beyond. ;-)
So that's my day in the land of the living and the giving, with a bonus wave from beyond the grave for good measure.
