29-Day Giving Challenge

Yestereday, a friend and I had lunch, laughed alot about the old days, and, in general, relaxed. On the way home, I stopped at a Dairy Queen to pick up a package of Dilly Bars for my dad. I had already fulfiled my "gift obligation" for the day, but the lunch had put me in an especially good mood and Dad does love Dilly Bars. A young boy and his even younger sister were standing at the counter. No adults in sight. I couldn't exactly hear the exchange between the clerk and the boy it was pretty clear the litle guy was trying to figure out how he could get he and his sister (I assumed) a treat. A single bill was passed from one hand to the other and he was counting change. After watching this for a minute, it was clear that something had to be done...After all, this is America! A kid should be able to get ice cream..Right??
So, I walked over to the counter, reached over the two children and handed the clerk a ten dollar bill. Motioning to the children, I said "This one's on me." Well, what I thought were going to be ice cream treats was an order for two hot dogs which just seems kind of paltry, so I asked, "What about some ice cream?" The little guy looked at me in amazement as his jaw dropped. Turning to the clerk, I said, "Just make those two kid's meals." Though I recognize childhood obestiy as a problem, these two were a long way from worry. And to treat myself, I ordered a soda and sat down.
As the little boy waited for their order, I took my soda and had a seat. The little girl came and slid into the seat beside me. I really didn't want this. I had just bought them lunch Couldn't she jstu leave me alone? "Are you an angel?" She was so cute and her voice was so full of reverence and awe, that I almost hated to burst her bubble. Her brother, now approaching with their tray took care of that.
"No, she's not an angel. She's a hero. Don't you remember? Angels just bring vegetables and bread and stuff. (There is a local food program in which workers are called angels) She's a hero..Thank you lady." He motioned for her to follow.
As my new BFF slid off the seat, she turned and whispered, "I don't care what he says, I think you're an angel."
I kind of choked up,and she was game before I could reply, so gathered my hero cape and angel wings and got Dad his Dilly Bars and floated out of the store.
