29-Day Giving Challenge

Last week was full of opportunity to share the gift of friendship with new friends and friends who have been in my life for decades!

I offered a shoulder to cry on as well being a companion for people with few visitors at a nursing home.

When asked, I shared my suggestions on their situations (growing their business, single looking for a good guy) but mostly I just offered the gift of "seeing" people. So many times, this is just what people want. To be seen and heard. This is a gift I can give each and every day.

Ha! More like a hungry soul who finds nourishment in being there for my Mom. My family is unique in that until my Mom moved into the nursing home last year she had ALWAYS, since the time she had children (54 years), had one of them living with her! And in my case, for years when I was a single parent, we lived with my parents. Many people in our society have lost a great deal by separating from our elders, our families. I'm the lucky one!

My sister and I talked about organizing an effort to connect people with their loved ones in nursing homes... something like this - since my sister is in Vermont and I'm 15 minutes from our Mom I take pictures when I visit and share them via email with the family and Mom's childhood friends on a regular basis. If Mom is in the mood to talk on the phone (not often) I seize the opportunity and we call from my cell phone on speaker so she doesn't have to hold the phone (she has parkinsons and alzheimer/s).

My sister so enjoys the connection that we thought it might be nice for her to visit her local nursing home and establish a relationship with someone there that she could then send photo's and make calls to their family members.

The logistics and "privacy" issues have gotten in the way, but the thought is there - anyone know of an organization that does this - sort of "passing along" the hugs from one person to another family? I love the concept...

Thank you for "giving" at the nursing home. My grandmother is in one far away and doesn't get many visitors. People like you are real angels. Bless you.
