29-Day Giving Challenge

Recently I got a rancid batch of omega 3 fish oil pills and became very ill. I guess that’s what I get for buying fish oil pills at the bargain grocery outlet! Anyway, I looked into fish-free omegas online, and found some for a decent price. But once I added shipping, it was not such a great deal after all! I called my local health food store to see if the price was comparable. We discovered that it would be a dollar more for me to just buy the pills locally, so that’s what I decided to do. Before we said goodbye, the gal thanked me for deciding to shop locally. It was just such a nice exchange; the way she took the time to listen to me and looked for the best price they had. But her thanking me to shop locally really touched my heart. It’s something I normally do with most things, and it made me realize how important it is in the big picture for me to buy locally whenever I can. So many businesses are struggling there days, and it feels good to do my small part to keep my community chugging along through this economic depression. (Not sure if we are officially in a depression, but it sure feels like it!)

By the way, omega 3’s are good for depression. That’s the main reason I take them! ;)

FYI:

How Omega-3 Fatty Acids Can Relieve Depression

Overfed and overweight, it seems unlikely that most Americans would be deficient in fat. But there is one we are missing: omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in fish, flaxseed, and some nuts. It is thought that this deficiency may cause or worsen depression in some people.

Western diets have changed drastically over the past 150 years, during which the ratio of fats from fish and wild plants to those from animal and vegetable oil sources, especially in processed foods, has gone from 1:1 to 1:10. This switch has coincided with a sharp rise in the rates of depression in recent decades, suggesting that omega-3 supplementation could be one approach to treating depression and other mood disorders.

"By taking in more omega-3s, we're essentially re-equilibrating the ratio," says David Mischoulon, MD, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.
