Choosing to give to charity for the holidays
My husband and I have decided that we will move away from the traditional gift buying for family members to giving to charity in place of holiday gifts. We started a little this year, but realize it is a transition for other family members. So, we're letting them know this year what to expect from us next year and also asking that they do the same in return for us next year.

I've tried to start this type of giving practice with my family for years, but they are mostly resistant. I would LOVE for them to come around one year. I really like your approach of easing into it and letting others know in advance that this is the plan for next year. Hugs to you!!

we did the same this year, I am so disheartened by the shameless consumerism, and frantic-ness that puts such a fog over the real meaning of the holidays. So we started a micro loan fund on KIVA.org. It funds people who are trying to help themselves out of dire straits, and once the loans are satisfied, the money is available to be re-lent, an ongoing, growing gift.

i really like this. i put "donations to Feeding America and Habitat for Humanity" on my Christmas list for my Mom this year. we'll see what happens. it may take a while to get people thinking in that direction. Merry Christmas to you, Yogini. Hugs, Dawn
