29-Day Giving Challenge

Yesterday, I was just waiting for a giving opportunity. The first appeared as I exited the interstate and a man was holding a sign asking for help. Years ago, my step-father told me to never give money to "those people". I took what he said to heart until the 29 Gifts challenge changed my viewpoint. This is the second time I have rolled down my window and offered something. Yesterday, it was a free frostie coupon and a double dip mint chocolate stick, as I had no cash. He looked a little puzzled by what I gave him and thanked me. The fact that I feel good when I do this tells me that it is definitely the right thing to do.

Some of 'those people' really do have a need for food, shelter, money. I work with our local food pantry/food kitchen and even in small rural communities like mine, there are homeless people who live in the Pisgah National Forest or in other woods. They are starting plans for a homeless shelter here. They had an article about it in our newspaper and there were homeless mothers and children living in their cars, a couple living in the forest who had finally gotten some housing, and other men out of work with nowhere to go. Yes, there may be professional beggars but most are really needy. I have heard many stories from others who have helped people who were literally starving and trying to hitchhike somewhere to find work......(Its OK to help them, just don't let them in your car because you don't know who's who.........but I probably don't need to tell you that:))
