Today we were planning to celebrate my father-in-law's birthday for dinner. So after I picked the boys up from school we went to Wendy's to buy him a gift certificate. He likes to eat there for lunch so we thought it would be the perfect gift.
On the way there the boys were fighting in the back seat so I turned on my favorite mood enhancer music. Kaukahi Hawaiian CD. The second song on it has powerful lyrics and tune and it is one of my favorites. It talks about protecting the earth. As it was playing I realized my older son was singing along!!! I really praised him for that. I grew up in Hawaii so the music is close to my heart. To have my kids like it too means a lot.

We get to Wendy's and the kids are hungry so I decided to get nuggets and a ice cream thingy they have for them. I got a little Diet Coke to perk me up. As they were eating my younger one started having a fit about something. I started in on the "you have a choice which feelings you are having, no one made or broke your day for you". I looked at my older son and said, right? He kind of sighs and says, "Wow! Look at that menu!" He is 9. I stopped, looked at him and said "Are you trying to change the subject?" Whether or not he was that perceptive didn't matter. I was being rather finger wagging. I thought the possibility of it was hilarious and we all started laughing. I told him I thought he was great.
Then he came and sat in my lap as best he could and snuggled to warm up from his shake. I was so happy I had little tears of happiness. Out came the camera and the boys took pictures of each other with me, as well as the cups and other interesting things in Wendy's.

On the way out they had this window grid dividing the dining area. It reminded me of those things at carnivals that you stick your face through and take photos. So I asked the boys to go do that. We were laughing our heads off. I haven't been unhappy lately but I also haven't been laughing as much as I should so I was so happy to be having a laughing great time with my boys.

And this is SO THEM!

On the way home we played our song again and I heard little man's voice behind me. Faking it along. :)
This day was so much bigger than buying a gift card. Amazing.
