Oops! I forgot to blog yesterday. But I didn't forget my giving. My friend Barbara's birthday was yesterday. I am notoriously bad about birthdays and usually never remember any of my friend's birthdays. They usually remember mine. Admittedly Facebook is a big help nowadays.
Barbara and I go way back to our activist days more than 30 years ago. We were both strong supporters of a Martin Luther King holiday back in the day. So yesterday I sent her, via Facebook, the song "Happy Birthday" by Stevie Wonder. The song was written to support a Martin Luther King holiday but the words are so appropriate for her commitment to social justice.
I also gave her a gift certificate to Kiva (
www.kiva.org) so that she can pick an entrepeneur to give a micro loan to. Kiva.org is one of those great websites that allows us to help people around the world pull themselves out of poverty by starting micro enterprise businesses.
If you're not familiar with Kiva, definitely check it out. It works like this. You LOAN an amount of money, as little as $25 to help meet the loan request. So if someone is requesting $300, you loan what you can and once the loan is fully funded the borrower(s) start paying back. Once they have paid back the loan, you can re-loan the money. So far I have made 6 loans. 3 have paid back in full and three more are beginning to pay back.
BTW, I came across this quote this morning and want to share it. "One thing I know: The only ones among you who will be really happy are those who will have sought and found how to serve." Albert Schweitzer
Peace Out.
