Yesterday I got into an argument with my dad. No biggie, my dad and I are pretty honest with each other and I was irritated and I told him, thus setting off his irritation and long story short, he revealed that he was frustrated because he feels he doesn't have anybody to talk to about his Big Ideas.
My dad is retired, 76, lives alone (which he prefers) but the only people he talks to on a regular basis are my brother and I. He does a lot of research during his day, he writes pages and pages of scientific hypotheses...and he doesn't share much with us because, well, we're not scientists.
Five minutes after hanging up the phone with him I called him back and apologized, but I was left with the thought - how to channel his need to talk about these complex, confusing subjects? I don't know the answer, but I did make it a point to call him today and NOT pick a fight. So that was my gift. I also left a birthday message for a dear friend.
A receive - this morning I met three girlfriends for coffee, and my best friend, knowing that I only have 20 dollars till Friday, paid for my coffee and muffin. I said, "Thank you for coffee today." and she said, "My pleasure, thank you for friendship."
