29-Day Giving Challenge

Days 19-21 Witnessing horror in support of my husband

Sounds strange but that's how I spent my weekend and I'm so glad I did. My husband held two screenings of the documentary "The Cove" this weekend as a fundraiser for his non-profit, Ocean Alliance. The Cove is about a dolphin slaughter that has been secretly occurring in Japan every year. A film crew managed to risk their lives to film this slaughter so that the world could see and put a stop to it. My husband consulted the film crew and his partner, Dr. Roger Payne was featured in the film. He knew that I would have a very hard time with the film and accepted the fact that I probably wouldn't see it, but I felt the need to be there for him so I went and sat through it twice. It is an amazing, inspiring achievement and despite having my heart broken twice, I was so proud that he was a part of it.

Thanks Jana. I've suggested that they make a cut of the film that's less graphic just to get the message out and so people can appreciate the team involved. Mandy Rae Cruikshank is a world champion freediver who swam into the cove in the middle of the night with her husband to plant the hidden cameras. She's my new hero!

Laurie - do you mean "Whale Wars" on Animal Planet? Paul Watson, captain of the Steve Irwin from the Sea Shepherd Society is also in The Cove.

What a tremendous gift indeed. I don't believe I would have sat through it. If I were to have a "totem" it would be the Dolphin. I love them and some day hope to swim with them. So glad your husband is involved in this project and that you support him with it.

Joyce - they trap migrating dolphins to sell to water parks around the world. The dolphins that are not chosen, including calves, are killed in a secret cove and are sold to fish markets in Japan, sometimes under different food labels, since most people would not choose to eat dolphin. They were also putting it into the school lunches but this is where my husband's work comes in. These animals are so polluted with mercury they're highly toxic, so two town councilors have managed to ban dolphin in school lunches. The fisherman have been offered equal pay to set the dolphins free but they declined the offer because the government has told them that whales and dolphins are overeating fish and they are providing necessary "pest control." Most people in Japan know nothing about this but this film is changing that.

What do they do with the dolphins after slaughter, amysue? Do they eat them?
