Yesterday I decided to embark on the 29 day Giving Challenge after reading about it in an article of the New York Times. When I went home for the night, I wondered if there would be any opportunties to start immediately giving! I was surprised to see an immediate opportunity with one of my roommates.
She had learned over Thanksgiving that one of her best friends had lost her father. For my roommate, feelings and thoughts came but she decided to stuff them away until another day. Last night when she found out about the memorial service and funeral, the feelings and thoughts came back full force. All she needed was someone to listen and to help her reason through what she was feeling.
It is very easy for me to neglect the people who I see every day in my life. I get tired and stressed out at work and then I want to shut myself away for a little while to recooperate, but this is not always the best thing when there are people in need right beside me. Last night was an amazing opportunity to give something that someone needed more than material things: just simply a shoulder to cry on.
