29-Day Giving Challenge

giving back to Prince William Sound

This weekend, weather-permitting, I'll join an annual beach cleanup in Prince William Sound. I've done this before, but not for many years now, so it will feel good to go out there again and give back to a place that has given so much to me. And it's particularly powerful to do this now - when the Gulf oil spill (more like an eruption) brings back memories of the Exxon Valdez oil spill's damage to Prince William Sound. My heart goes out to all the folks along the Gulf coast, and to all the marine life - birds, fish, dolphins, manatees - who are suffering and dying because of this deadly oil. I'll keep working to get out the message that we need to cure our addiction from dirty energy!

That's wonderful. The Green Tree in me jumps up and down in excitement for this project.
When I went on my afternoon walk yesterday, I met a friend of a friend, returning to the library with her little boy, which is no more than 5 years old. When we were talking, he was glancing through the pages of her books- scholarly works with no pictures. Then he got distracted. Unfortunately, there is litter on our campus, since students and faculty/staff can be lazy and our trash cans sometimes overflow. This little boy went out of his way to pick up all the pieces his tiny hands could hold and march them over to the trash can, by himself. He was my hero.
Speaking of environmental help, there is an interesting group called Matter of Trust.org, who has found a way to use hair and nylons to assist in the oil spill. Seriously, it's an awesome project and you (and your hairdressers and pet groomers) should donate. I have heard they are in need of recycled nylons too.
