Yesterday I was at home with a bad cold and really could not go out to do very much, which would have included giving to someone in need, had I been able to venture out, so I had to come up with something to do from here.
We had a huge dump of snow and my husband went out to play with my daughter while I took a nap. No sooner had I fallen into a deep sleep then my daughter came back in and asked me to come out and take pictures. That gave me an idea, I could go out and spend time with my family at the same time as documenting the "white Christmas" conditions for my mother, who we were supposed to be visiting right now but haven't been able to because of weather-related travel delays.
So I went out and shot a movie of the family playing in the snow, then later added sound effects (footsteps in the snow), and a lighthearted Christmas tune as background music zipped it into a smaller file and emailed it off to my mother. She got a real kick out of it. It didn't cost anything, but I think it was still a gift, and maybe a better gift than one I could have bought in a shop. 1) I got to spend time with my family, and there may not be any better gift than that. It was also memory making, and that always gives back. 2) I got to share that fun-in-the-snow family time with my mother, helping her to feel a little more closer to us at a time when we should have been with her but are still so far away.
Today, I also gave in a non-monetary way. It is the Winter Solstice (shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere, and the day where we can look forward to more sunlight on each successive day...) and I felt in a way like it was new year's and I wanted to mark this day in a special way. Many yogis around the world do this by doing 108 sun salutations, and I for the very first time joined that tradition. The sun was peeking through the windows by the time I finished, and the exertion of doing the sequence was very warming. You may say how is this giving? Well, it was a very mindful practice and I did it with giving intentions for loved ones and the year ahead. In my mind, at least, it qualified as a gift. Namaste.
