In case you haven't heard, the Washington DC area has been really hit by snow for the last week or so. I live in a condo building where we usually say hi to our neighbors without really knowing their names. We have a common element parking lot and after the 20+ inches we got last Saturday everyone was trying to dig their cars out from under all that snow. Most of us don't have snow shovels. But a few neighbors who did, put notes up saying they would leave their shovels outside their doors for others to use. Also the condo maintenance staff has worked tirelessly to keep the sidewalks, pathways and stairs shoveled.
So this morning I wrote notes to the neighbors whose names I don't know, thanking them for offering their shovels. I also wrote a note to Jose, one of our hard working maintenance staff who doesn't speak much English and who I'm sure, doesn't make much money. Thanks to Google I was able to translate my note into Spanish and I slipped a little cash into the envelope.
Greg Mortenson is my hero. If you haven't read
Three Cups of Tea, I urge you to. And if you don't know who Greg Mortenson is; he is a man who single handedly built schools in the most remote areas of Pakistan to counter the extremist madrassas. He educates girls who would have never had a chance to go to school before he came into their lives. Today I donated on line to the Central Asia Institute (CAI), the organization that overseas the work Greg does in Pakistan and now Afghanistan.
You know, I wake up every day in awe of how blessed I am. "To whom much is given, much more will be required." Luke 12:48
P.S. I'm no longer keeping track each day of my gifts. But I make the conscious effort to give every day. So I will just post here periodically to stay connected to this wonderful group of givers.
