For the past month and a half, I've been busy with the relief efforts in Cagayan de Oro City where a flash flood claimed the lives of thousands, damaged millions of properties and changed the lives of those who survived. Inspite of the heartbreaking devastation there, I was still filled with hope when I saw people from all walks of life stepped in to help.
With the amount of help that the local communities and the countries from all over the world have given, I realized that re-building lives requires more than that. Giving should be an endless, self-less act. We delivered the last batch of relief goods last Friday. And so I asked myself: What now?
Then an email alert came from the 29-Day org. Some of our friends here were giving their birthday greetings to me. I wondered why for the past years since I became a member here, people always greeted me 2 or a day early before my birthday. I realized that I input the 2nd day instead of the 4th day of February.
Those early birthday greetings were the answers. Of course, re-join the 29 day giving challenge so that I will be reminded everyday to always give back!
I started on the day that I turned 30 :D
I was to have my rest on my birthday. I made that clear to my family. But with the absence of our help and with my mother left alone in the kitchen, I decided to forget about rest and stepped up to help.
But what I really gave that day to God, to my family and friends and to all the people who I will encounter in the future, was my commitment to be available to them when they need me. (this requires a long story why my committing to that is significant but I will save that for another day ;D)
