Round 2 Self Give- Harder than I thought it would be

I decided to do a self give round because the winter weather always gets me in a funk and I thought it would help me get through January in a better state of mind. My first gift was to buy a planner for myself. It is put out by a company in St.Louis called Daysteps and it's a combo planner, journal and health and fitness tracker. I love this gift! I'm a chronic procrastinator and so far this is really helping me stay focused. I would love to say 2010 was the year I got my act together. My 2nd gift to myself was to purge my bedroom of all old magazines and catalogs and all miscellaneous junk. I have pack rat tendencies (but not a scary hoarder) and it felt so good to go to sleep with a super clean bedroom.

The third day was hard for me to come up with a "real" gift. I started feeling selfish! I had a vacation day scheduled from work to regroup after the holidays and I guess that is my gift. Day 4, I had to take my son to the dentist before he goes back to college and I commented on a restaurant that I like that's right near the dentist. My son said lets go. Seize the moment! Last thing I need after the holidays is another meal out but it felt great to spend time with my son before he leaves for school. Day 5, I was leaving to go out for dinner with my husband and it's sooo cold here. I bought a beautiful wool scarf for a gift exchange for the holidays but then the exchange was canceled. I've been meaning to return it but in flash I grabbed the scarf and put it on. I love my new warm scarf!

Today is day 6 and after neurosing all week about it I made an appointment to get a manicure this afternoon. I'm a nurse and my hands always look horrendous but I have a really hard time spending money on something that I consider a luxury. So I'm looking forward to my gift of "non-raggedy" hands.

It really is much easier for me to give to others but I suppose I deserve to treat myself once in a while. It feels great if you let yourself enjoy it and give up the guilt.

Self gives are SO important, especially if they are difficult! As Pamela said, you need to refill the well. We are sadly taught that taking care of ourselves is 'selfish' it is not, in fact if we don't take care of ourselves we are putting a burden onto others eventually, because we break down (physically and/or emotionally) and that is not good for anyone. Selfish is not sharing, not giving when you are able -- taking care of yourself is a gift to those around you as well as to yourself. I hope you let yourself enjoy this round fully -- have FUN!!!

Fill up the well (so you can give to others)... sounds like you need it and sometimes it's the best we can "give"! I hope you got a massage with the manicure like they do at the nail salon I go to - that's a real luxury and one of the best things I can do for myself. I turned a friend of mine on to it and now she's a regular too (in my book that count as a gift to refer someone to enjoy the same thing you do)!
