29-Day Giving Challenge

Day 19

This morning my oldest cat Nick presented himself for an all over rub and chin scratching. I slowed me pace to give him the gift, which of course was a gift for me too. His thunderous purr is one of the best sounds in my world.

A girlfriend took me out to dinner to celebrate my birthday. When I arrived she was in tears. Her dogs had found a bunny nest in the middle of the back yard and had caught and killed 3 baby bunnys. She had heard them screaming and had tried to save them, but to no avail. It was an awful thing to happen and she felt helpless and sick. After dinner we came back to her house and she let the dogs out again. 2 Minutes later Butch came to the door and I heard the bunny alarm. I grabbed his neck and he dropped the baby. I scooped it up and it was unhurt. I put it in a box while we went out to see if there where any more. The nest was empty and the dogs where not finding anymore. The nest was empty before too, so this one must have escaped. When we were sure there were no more we began to research what to do. After going through all the options I helped my friend see that the best option was to put the baby back in its nest so the mom could nurse it and it could grow enough to be safe. This was a huge inconvenience for her because it meant not letting the dogs out until the bunny had left. She was reluctant. I felt like it was a gift that I was there and able to help her overcome her resistance for the good of the last bunny. She and the dogs will enjoy the extra walks too, I hope.
