Today I gave something away that I shouldn’t have had in the first place. I’m not sure why I took it. It was just there, on the bedside table. A symbolic evidence to the end of my marriage. For three years it just sat there as reminder of my life that was. A witness, a promise. It yellowed with age, much like his complexion. I used to try it on, wear it around the house and on one occasion out. It was too big, felt awkward but bore such meaning. And then, this morning, I realised that I didn’t need it anymore. I dug a hole, threw it in the ground and planted a tea tree. Tea trees have healing, antiseptic qualities. How perfect is that? So today, my gift was to my garden. May its beauty grow over the heartache and flourish – strong, happy and true.
